In Inuyasha, the developing romantic relationship between Inuyasha and Kagome took center stage. As a result, many people remember Kagome more for being in the middle of the Inuyasha – Kagome – Kikyo love triangle, as opposed to her own merits. In addition, Inuyasha running to save her every battle didn't help.

While technically Kagome was the reincarnation of Kikyo and possessed some of Kikyo's priestess abilities, Kagome proved early on that she had her own strengths. Although Kagome may have been sometimes clueless and somehow always managed to lose the sacred jewel fragments, she was able to think quickly and get creative to fight demons. Here are 10 times Kagome proved herself in season one, as one of the strongest characters of Inuyasha.

10 Taking Down the Crow Demon

In the first 24 hours of being in Feudal Japan, Kagome goes through a lot. After almost dying in episode one, she is already ready to go home. But as her luck would have it, she winds up getting kidnapped and the Sacred Jewel is put at risk again.

When a crow demon tried to get away with the jewel, Kagome sprung into action and attempted to shoot it down with a bow and arrow. With zero experience in archery, Kagome thought quickly and attached the crow's feet to the arrow so it would make its way back to the crow demon. While she defeated the demon, she also accidentally broke the Sacred Jewel into many, many, shards.

9 Aiding in the Defeat of Yura

It can be argued that the best thing to do while two demons are fighting is to stay out of their way, especially when you are the only human in the mix. However, Kagome let it be known early on she was not the type to stay back.

In the middle of the battle between Inuyasha and Yura the hair demon, Kagome notices that the source of Yura's powers is a red skull. While her supernatural powers aided her in recognizing this fact, Kagome was able to take advantage of the fight and search for the skull until she was able to smash it into pieces, thus slaying the demon Yura.

8 Pulled Out Tetsusaiga

The "sword in the stone" is a popular trope and Inuyasha, of course, has its own adaptation. Tetsusaiga (also known as Tessaiga) is a sword forged from Inuyasha and Sesshomaru's fathers' fang, which he left to Inuyasha.

However, when Sesshomaru and Inuyasha battled at their father's graveyard, neither of them proved able to pull the sword out of the stone it was in. Sesshomaru was burned when he touched it while Inuyasha just could not get it out. In came Kagome, who accidentally pulled it out in a dramatic moment while yelling Inuyasha's name.

7 Saving the Prince Inside the Toad

One of the reasons Inuyasha and Kagome work well together is because they balance each other out. Early on, Inuyasha wants to fight his way out of every situation, not caring who or what gets hurt in the process; conversely, Kagome is the one who thinks logically, wanting to make sure to save people when possible.

When faced with the challenge of trying to save a prince possessed by a Toad demon, Kagome quickly thought outside of the box. Grabbing one of her modern era items, hairspray, she made a flamethrower to burn the demon out of the prince.

6 Rescuing Shippo From Manten

As previously mentioned, Kagome has a knack for losing the Sacred Jewel shards or allowing them to easily get stolen. When Kagome and Inuyasha encountered Shippo, a child demon fox, Kagome accidentally let him run off with the shards.

While chasing him down, she encounters Manten, a Thunder Brother preparing to attack Shippo. Without Inuyasha there to protect her, Kagome uses her developing archery skills to shoot Manten and stop him from attacking Shippo. Ultimately, Manten is able to knock Kagome out and kidnap her; however, while in his trap, she manages to trick him into sparing her life.

5 Facing off with Manten Again

It takes guts to face off with someone who can easily kill you; that said, to do it twice might mean someone is a little crazy. Kagome frequently proves that she is not someone to sit around idly while Inuyasha does all the fighting.

Seeing a window of opportunity to get the Sacred Jewel shards from Manten, Kagome devices a plan with Shippo. Ultimately, the plan failed since Manten was still way stronger than Kagome and Shippo combined, who attacked them in response; nevertheless, her actions were not in vain as this attack prompted Inuyasha to kill Manten.

4 Facing Off with the Ancient Noh Mask

Whenever faced with a demon in Feudal Japan, Kagome can always rely on Inuyasha or someone else in the crew to help her. Back at home in her current time though, Kagome only has herself. In addition, she has her family to protect.

When an ancient Noh mask is awakened due to the Sacred Jewel shards, Kagome must act fast to protect her brother Sota and herself. Instead of getting Inuyasha herself, she decides to bait the Noh mask demon and order Sota to fetch Inuyasha in order to protect him. Kagome will do whatever it takes to protect her loved ones.

3 Saving Human Inuyasha

On account of being a half-demon with extraordinary strength and skills, it is not often that Inuyasha is truly in danger. But he isn't immune to weaknesses, and every new moon he turns human for a night. Normally, Inuyasha just lays low during this time.

However, when the gang got roped into assisting a girl, they were caught into a trap set by a spider demon, who intentionally sought to exploit Inuyasha in human form. When Inuyasha failed to fight as a human, Kagome, Tetsusaiga in hand, stepped up to rescue him at a pivotal moment. This was especially dangerous considering if she failed, no one was there to rescue them.

2 Facing off with Sesshomaru

Sesshomaru is one of the strongest demons in Inuyasha. Being that he is a full demon, as opposed to a half-demon, he possesses powers beyond compare to those of Inuyasha.

While being aided by Naraku, Sesshomaru is able to wield Tetsusiaga with a human arm, allowing the demon to wreak havoc on Inuyasha and the crew. Kagome seemingly disappears in order to aid Miroku but comes back with an arrow shot that reverses the Tetsusiaga transformation. Despite knowing how powerful Sesshomaru is, Kagome still took a huge risk in order to save the others.

1 Stopping Kikyo from Taking Inuyasha to Hell

Inuyasha Kagome dodges attack

Throughout Inuyasha, it's hard not to pick a side when it comes to Kagome versus Kikyo. Both characters have their cons and pros, and as fans get to know them more as the series goes on, it becomes apparent why it isn't easy for Inuyasha to pick between them.

In the scene where Kikyo tries to take Inuyasha to hell, poor Kagome has to witness the entire spectacle of Inuyasha confessing that he is still in love with Kikyo, who is hellbent on getting her revenge. Kagome has to fight through her own heartbreak, as she realizes her feelings for Inuyasha, and she still manages to plead with Kikyo to save Inuyasha. Her will alone prevented Kikyo from completing her mission.
