Inuyasha may have ended a while ago, but it is definitely a franchise that lives on in the hearts of its many fans. At the time it was running, Kikyo, Kagome, and Inuyasha were a widely discussed love triangle in the anime community. Though, it was pretty obvious with one Inuyasha was going to end up with. No surprises here guys, he ended up with Kagome in the end.

However, fans still argue sometimes that he and Kikyo were a better couple. Kikyo ends up dying in the end, so would Inuyasha have chosen differently if she lived? We will never know. Here is a list of five reasons Kikyo was a better match for him and five reasons he and Kagome were better suited for each other.

10 Kikyo Was From His Time

Possibly the biggest difference between Kagome and Kikyo is the world they have lived in. People are shaped by their community, and Kikyo was raised in the feudal era and Kagome in the modern era. Inuyasha was raised in the same era as Kikyo, so they would understand each other much more on various topics related to the times they lived in.

For Kagome, she has school, different clothes, a family from a different time, and probably cannot connect to Inuyasha when it comes to politics, pop culture, and more.

9 Kagome Was Not Dead

Honestly, this was probably the biggest deciding factor for Inuyasha. Kikyo died. The only reason she is a character in the show is that she was brought back to life with magic, and its even debatable if her undead self is the same woman that he loved. Even Kikyo seemed to be aware that they could never be together because she had already died. Deep down, fans knew this too.

8 Kikyo Was An Outcast Like him

Kikyo was a very special priestess, as she was tasked to guard the Sacred Jewel. This made her a constant target to be attacked demons and sometimes even humans. Due to this, people treated her differently. She was either revered, feared, or an obstacle to the jewel. She was an outcast. Inuyasha was an outcast as well for being half-demon and half-human. Neither side would accept him due to either being too weak or too monstrous.

This commonality is what brought him and Kikyo together in the first place. They saw past each other's socially constructed identities and fell in love. That is very romantic and deep.

7 Kagome Was Positive

So the Kikyo fans got to know was a stick in the mud compared to Kagome. Kagome was cheerful, hopeful, and brought out the best in Inuyasha (when they weren't arguing at least). Kikyo was incredibly different. She was fatalistic, manipulative, and a downer to the point she made Inuyasha feel constant guilt. While it is understandable that Kikyo would be depressing after all that she has been through, it really can make for an unhealthy relationship. Inuyasha acted different with Kagome than with Kikyo. With Kikyo, he was very serious and sad. With Kagome, he honestly just seemed more like himself.

6 Kikyo Did Not Tell Him To "Sit"

Kagome could be very immature at times. At the beginning of the show, in order to control Inuyasha before they become friends, she could say "sit" and a magical necklace would force him to the ground. It was understandable at the time since he was attacking her. However, she would start to say it just when he mad her angry. While women brutalizing men is often played as comedy in anime, we have to admit it is problematic.

5 Inuyasha's Friends Liked Kagome

Inuyasha did not really have friends when he was with Kikyo. Their relationship was isolated. With Kagome, he made a lot of friends. His world was not just about her like it was with Kikyo. That is healthy.

Not only did he make friends, but they were Kagome's friends too. Between Kikyo and Kagome, his friends would be there for Kagome. Kikyo was not a team player while Kagome was.

4 Kikyo Was His First Love

Most Kikyo fans argue that Inuyasha and Kikyo's love is deeper and what he has with Kagome, but what does that mean? Well, it's a first love. It's an old love. It is the kind of love that is tragic and hurts. It is some Romeo and Juliet level narrative. That is what they mean.

Kikyo was there before Kagome and she and Inuyasha went through a lot together. The more pain a couple goes through together sometimes just makes their love stronger.

3 Kagome Brought Snacks From The Future

This may sound silly, but it makes a good point. Kagome is from the future. To all the characters in the feudal era, she is a miracle worker for the kinds of stuff she brings back in time. When Kagome does not bring food she buys from the market, they have to hunt, kill, and cook. She introduced instant noodles, bicycles, soda, and so much more to Inuyasha. Wouldn't you want a partner from the future to get you some cool snacks and gizmos?

2 Kikyo Was A Better Fighter

Since she was raised in the feudal era and had the guard a powerful item, Kikyo was a badass fighter. She was a demon slayer and could shoot an arrow with a lot of distance and precision. In this manner, she was an equal with Inuyasha. Kagome eventually got somewhat good with a bow, but never like Kikyo. In most of the fights, Inuyasha is the one doing all the work. In the few scenes where Kikyo and Inuyasha fight together though, they are on equal ground.

1 Kagome Was Not Bound To An Oath

Part of why Kikyo wanted to turn Inuyasha human was so the Sacred Jewel would disappear and she would finally be a free woman. She swore an oath to protect the Scared Jewel, and that made it so she could never get married, have a family, or do much else.

Kagome is just a high school student. She has taken no oath and is free to make her own decisions.
