Hailee Steinfeld has admitted she's not sure whether she's still supposed to be leading a Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse spinoff focusing on Spider-Gwen.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse introduced a whole host of Spider characters from a variety of dimensions. Although Miles Morales served as lead, Peter Parker, Spider-Gwen, Peter Porker, Spider-Man Noir and Peni Parker were all part of the ensemble. Following the huge success of the 2018 movie, there were reports Steinfeld would get her own all-female Spider-Gwen movie.

Discussing the next Spider-Verse movie and the female-centric spinoff, Steinfeld was unable to provide any updates on either to Entertainment Tonight, stating, "I am not in the know with these things." Steinfeld continued, "It's funny because I feel like this is the time to figure it out," though she acknowledged, "Obviously, everything has kind of been slightly put on hold. So there hasn't been much that I've heard lately." However, Steinfeld did express excitement for Spider-Gwen as a character, stating, "She's capable of the world... those storylines are almost endless."

With Into the Spider-Verse grossing an impressive $375.5 million and earning an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, Sony quickly greenlit a sequel and plans to expand the Spider-Verse further. Alongside Into the Spider-Verse 2, there's the idea of an all-female spinoff that would bring back Steinfeld as Spider-Gwen and include new additions such as Jessica Drew's Spider-Woman and Cindy Moon's Silk. Batman: Year One's Lauren Montgomery is rumored to direct with Captain Marvel's Bek Smith writing the script.

The spinoff would join a series of female-centric that have entered development or production in recent years. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has powered ahead with Ant-Man and the WaspCaptain Marvel and Black Widow. Similar to an all-female Spider-Verse movie, there are also talks of an all-female Avengers outing for the MCU. Meanwhile, Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters has Madame Web, Jackpot and live-action Silk films in development, the latter would which would center on an iteration of Silk separate from her appearance in a Spider-Verse spinoff.

As for the Spider-Verse franchise itself, focus has been placed on the Into the Spider-Verse sequel. Directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord have signed a five-year deal with Sony for Spider-Verse films. Though Steinfeld has no knowledge of the rumored Spider-Gwen spinoff, this does not rule out its development.
