A new report claims that voice actor Christopher Daniel Barnes will reprise his role from Spider-Man: The Animated Series in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2.
That Hashtag Show is reporting that Barnes is in final talks to appear in the sequel to the hit animated film from Sony. They have heard that his role will be small but the actor will voice the version of the character who appeared in the '90s animated series, with the film even replicating the style of the show. The report claims Barnes will appear in a few key scenes before showing up during the film's finale. Additional characters from other Spider-Man media are also teased, though no other details were given.
Barnes voiced Peter Parker/Spider-Man in 65 episodes of the series from 1994 to 1998. He's also appeared in numerous other Spider-Man animated shows and multiple Spidey games, voicing Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Man 2099, Spyder-Knight, Electro, Vulture and more.
The first Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse film featured numerous comic book characters from across Marvel's Spider-Verse, with one version of Peter Parker even seemingly pulled from the Sam Raimi movie trilogy. He was joined by Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy, Penny Parker, Spider-Ham, Spider-Man Noir and another Peter Parker, The post-credits scene then saw Spider-Man 2099 jump to a dimension based on the Spider-Man series from 1967, where he encountered the now-infamous pointing Spider-Man. With numerous other animated shows and films featuring the character to choose from, there's certainly no shortage of cameos for the sequel to use.
The film doesn't yet have an official title or plot, but it's said to feature the villain The Spot, who can fittingly jump through dimensions using small portals. Rumors have also indicated that Silk will make her debut in the movie. Sony is currently setting up a live-action TV show for Amazon featuring the hero, one of many projects that will bring Sony's Spider-Man characters to live-action for the first time.
The sequel has been in production since last summer and will arrive next fall. Joaquim Dos Santos will direct with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller serving as producers alongside Sony's Amy Pascal, who produces the live-action Spider-Man films with Marvel Studios. Composer Daniel Pemberton will also return for the sequel.
Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 arrives in theaters Oct. 7, 2022.
