Jason Momoa has played some noteworthy characters, including Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones and, more recently, the title role in Aquaman. Yet it’s his lead role in the Apple TV+ drama See that he points to as his favorite part to date.

In See, Momoa plays Baba Voss, the leader of a tribe called the Alkenny who live 600 years in the future, after Earth’s population has been decimated, and the survivors are left blind. The tribe takes in a pregnant woman whom he soon marries. Unable to have children, Baba Voss raises hers as his own. However, they turn out to have the ability to see, which places both the tribe and the family in grave danger.

During a press conference and roundtable discussion with CBR and other outlets, Momoa talked about what drew him to See and his passion for the role of Baba Voss. Momoa described immediately feeling a sense of ownership of the role when he read the script.

“The first time I got the script, let’s just say, this has only happened twice in my life, once is when I read Game of Thrones, and two, was when I read this," he said. "And I was on a train from Cornwall to London, just wrapping a show I was doing, and my agent sent it through… I was with all my best friends that I’d hired on this other show, so I was literally with the best of the best in my life as actors. We had a long train ride, and I just read it out loud, which was the first time I’ve ever read it out loud. And all my friends were riveted. I actually called… after about page five and was like, ‘Get me in… No one’s going to beat me. This is my role.'

“It was probably the best script that I’ve ever read,” Momoa added. “And all these images kept flying in [my mind], and it was just born. It was born in me. And then I went to [creator] Steven [Knight], I was like, ‘Thank you for writing this for me. No one else could do this.’ Not normally this cocky, but I’m like, seriously…. This was it. So I mean, this is my favorite role."

Fortunately for Momoa, he was the See producers’ choice to play the role, In fact, executive producer Jenno Topping confessed they had “no other person in our mind” for Baba Voss other than Momoa. So Momoa was quickly off and running with the part.

Yet, as the trailer for See makes clear, on the surface the character bears a striking resemblance to others Momoa has tackled. He acknowledged that, noting “You know, I’ve played a lot of these – when you look at this on the page, it’s like here’s Jason dressed up in fur, lots of weapons, and I’ve done that pretty much my whole career.”

Despite that superficial resemblance to past roles, Momoa felt he could show more of his range as an actor through the character of Baba Voss. He explained, “I’ve been trying to do things where I smile and people like me and I can have relationships. And so, this was perfect because Drogo, you know there was never a fight scene in Game of Thrones. It was great writing, but there was never that moment where you’re like, ‘Oh, I want to see what he goes into. But then I also want to see when he has a kid, what’s he going to be like?’…

“The thing is,” he continued, “I didn’t get to exercise all the things that I’m capable of doing. I am a father. My two children, they’re almost teenagers… and I’m married for 14 years. [Baba Voss is] crumbling inside trying to keep his family together and survive this gnarly world. And that’s just beautiful. And so all my characters have never gone to that…. I really, really, really, really love this role, because I got to exercise all these beautiful things inside of me as an actor that I’ve never been able to do before.”

While Momoa was thrilled to be able to show a new side of himself through his role in See, he was also quick to point out that he wouldn’t want to take on a more traditional role in order to play a husband or father.

“I’m just very passionate about this role and it was almost perfectly written for something that I have that no one has seen -- me as a father,” Momoa declared. “They haven’t seen those things so it was very exciting to me. The outside of it, yes, it’s like fur, man-bun, hog-splitter, sweet! That’s a dream job. I would be bummed if I was playing a doctor or lawyer. You put me in a suit I’m uncomfortable.”

Starring Jason Momoa and Alfre Woodard, See will launch alongside Apple TV+ on Nov. 1.
