Anime is no stranger to controversy. As long as fans continue to consume and enjoy it, there will always be a controversy or two that'll pop up in the medium. The latest controversy has to do with a little sex comedy called Interspecies Reviewers.

Wholly unapologetic in its premise and "storytelling," the anime is rife with things that may put some people off and other content matter that might make others flock to it. That dynamic causing quite the breeding ground that has led to a number of controversies ever since the anime premiered this season. Here is what you need to know about this controversial anime.

10 The Plot

Ishuzoku Reviewers (the Japanese name for the show) is a sex comedy totally unashamed of its premise. Featuring the misadventures of a group of fantasy adventurers as they search far and wide for monster girls to then enjoy their services at a brothel. The young men then go to their local tavern to review their experience with each different species of girl.

There is not much more to it. There is no real overarching plot, no demon lord for them to fight, and no grand adventure (of the typical sort) that the characters must face. They go. They bang. And then they review it. With a few in-between story beats that set up what type of monster girl they'll be bedding next.

9 Basically, All Of The Girls Have Succubus Blood In Them

The reason why there are so many brothels in the world of Interspecies Reviewers is twofold. One, they are said to be very profitable for both the prostitutes and the establishments. Two, the girls that work there almost always have succubus ancestry to them. Usually earning them the title of succu-girl.

Since succubi need sex for survival, the Orc Political Party is more than happy to help fund pleasant and safe working environments for the girls. So much so that some girls even use the most minimal of succubus ancestry to earn a job at one of the brothels. The job might be considered a dead-end for some, but in this fiction, the girls often make enough to leaven whenever they want to.

8 Anything And Everything

Leave your normal standards of beauty at the door. The Interspecies Reviewers are more than willing to review anything and everything as long it is physically possible to have sex with them.

So along with more standard fantasy races with more human traits like elves and catgirls, they go deep into what sorta monster girls they review. This includes salamander girls (who can literally burn you if you don't have fire resistance and run a hell of a BBQ joint), fairies (where size does in fact matter), and all sorts of other monster girls that may lean more towards monster than girl.

7 It Is Explicit, But It Is Censored

This isn't your parent's anime sex comedy. While they do spend time setting things up with fan service and innuendo, they go straight into the down and dirty at one point in each episode. The screen usually fades to black but the sound is completely uncensored for the most part.

And when they do show something, there are usually giant censor bars that block all of the action. Usually only showing enough to let you know what is going on and have the viewer's brain fill in gaps if that is what they want.

6 It Is Also Uncensored

While Funimation showed the censored version of the show here in the west, Japan has the opportunity to watch Interspecies Reviews completely uncensored on a certain channel. AT-X, a premium anime channel in Japan, has quite a reputation for showing anime completely uncensored and they continue to do so with this show.

Unfortunately, this means any interested viewers have to have a subscription to a Japanese premium channel and must know Japanese to get the complete uncensored experience legally. Since the channel does not offer English or any other non-Japanese subs for those that wish to enjoy it in another language.

5 One Of The Characters Is A Hermaphrodite

Along the way, the Interspecies Reviewers manage to pick up a new member to their core two-man group. After saving a young angel from a monster, they promptly take him to a brothel and foot his bill. Crimvael eventually becomes a main part of the cast.

What the boys didn't know is that Crim is a hermaphrodite. To avoid trouble with them he told them he was a boy, but in actuality, he was born with both parts. Combining that with his innocence, it gives him a certain viewpoint that the other reviewers don't possess when rating brothels and monster girls.

4 Funimation Canceled It

Here comes one of the first big controversies concerning this show. After showing the first three episodes, Funimation stated that the anime falls outside of their standards and took it down from their streaming service, effectively canceling it in the west.

After that other channels and streaming services joined them. Amazon Prime removing Interspecies Reviewers from their list of shows and even the Japanese channel, Tokyo MX, canceling the broadcast after a few episodes too. Leaving the fans high and dry if they wanted to watch the show on those particular platforms.

3 It Had A Dub

Funimation had a dub of the first episode before it was suddenly taken down from the site. While there are still short snippets of it online, for the most part, the episode is unavailable legally.

Just like the show, the dub was effectively canceled when they pulled the plug on the subbed version. Any chance for any more episodes fading away and leaving the voice actors with one less job to voice their talents for. Unfortunately, there is no other information about why the sub and the dub were canceled. The only information given was the same as when they first canceled it. The show simply wasn't up to Funimation's standards.

2 Fans Are Angry That Funimation Canceled It

Needless to say, the fans weren't too happy that they no longer will be able to watch the show. Several going to Twitter and other forms of social media to voice their displeasure at the sudden removal of the anime.

One of the biggest complaints seems to be about why they would license a show that didn't do an ounce to hide what it was about and then cancel it because of its content. The basic perverted plot and premise right there in the synopsis for the show. Especially since they were advertising the series when they first acquired the license.

1 Was #2 On MyAnimeList

Angry fans do angry things, and when they are supported by several popular Youtubers that sic their fans on MyAnimeList, those angry things can stir big controversies. The combined might of the fans rocketing MAL's score for Interspecies Reviewers to the number two greatest anime of all time. Beating classics like Evangelion, Steins;Gate, and Cowboy Bebop and sitting just below Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

The vote brigading was so bad that MAL had to completely change its site's rules on how anime is scored, with extra emphasis on preventing vote brigading from drastically changing an anime's score. The new rules currently leaving Interspecies Reviewers at a 7.63 on their website.
