WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Injustice: Year Zero #5, by Tom Taylor, Roge Antonio, Rain Beredo, and Wes Abbott, available now.

Injustice: Year Zero has placed the Justice Society of America under severe duress thanks to the amulet of Apophis. Hawkgirl got possessed by the Egyptian Lord of Chaos residing inside, which led to a World War II firefight that claimed Hawkman's life.

It ended up being used by Dirk, a Nazi general, to keep the war going but after Hawkgirl killed him in revenge, the amulet was stored at the bottom of Challenger Deep. Now, in Issue #5, the relic has been recovered in the present and sadly, it's given Joker his most horrifying power boost ever.

Joker's known for guns, knives, bombs, hyenas, his clown gang, and, of course, Harley Quinn. But this time, he's upgraded like never before thanks to the secret the JSA kept on the ocean floor. Andre Chavard of the Boy Commandos broke out of jail and partnered with Joker and Harley to get the item as he overhead Dr. Mid-Nite and Green Lantern Alan Scott discussing hiding the amulet away years ago. Andre promised Joker the power of a god in exchange for seeing his grandson, and now, the Clown Prince of Crime has used Black Manta's services to unearth it from its trove in the deep.

But when Joker goes to slip it on, Andre tries to grab it as he wanted it all along. The Joker slaps the old man away, though, and puts the relic on, changing. He has a more regal look to him, including his hair, and when Andre pulls a gun and tries to blast them away, we see him using its abilities. Andre can't believe the gun's not firing but it's because Joker's already in his head. The relic gives him mind-control powers and Andre just can't pull the trigger, which allows Joker to play a sadistic game with him.

Joker tells him to go to the airlock, and from there, he orders Manta to eject Andre, who then dies under the sea. Now, we don't know if the power of persuasion is being used on Manta but chances are he got paid and is just doing his job. As for Harley, she's scared as seen when she asked him to go easy on Andre, all to no avail. Joker snapped at her and made it clear no one should get in the way of his retribution, so we can see the heroic seeds sown here for when she eventually turns good later on in the comics and video games.

Joker then spots a peeping Alan outside their sub and decides to play with another "toy," getting his Lantern bubble to burst and indicating he's already in his mind too. This reaffirms that the amulet's his ideal weapon and what's further intriguing is the corrupting force seems to be letting Joker take the wheel. Even the Spectre was scared of its hold, especially after ordering Hitler to kill himself, so now we've got a mix of Joker and Max Lord on our hands. It's worth noting that when Dirk wielded it, it was hinted apart from following his words, he could make people see what he wanted them to see as well. Until all is finally revealed, what's for certain is this Joker is the most dangerous ever and he's intent on breaking the JSA.
