“Injustice: Gods Among Us” Trailer Goes Behind The Scenes

WB Games and “Mortal Kombat” developer NetherRealm Studios have released the newest trailer for “Injustice: Gods Among Us,” the April 2013-releasing fighting game featuring the heroes and villains of DC Comics. The newest trailer goes behind the scenes of the game, detailing the technological upgrades and changes from NetherRealm’s “Mortal Kombat,” including visual improvements and changes to the button layout and command system. The developers have done away with the block button, choosing to utilize a directional command for the action instead. “Injustice” features light, medium and heavy attack buttons and a fourth “character trait” button that is designed to showcase each character’s special abilities. Nightwing, for example, uses the button to switch between Kali sticks and a staff, while Cyborg uses the button to regain health.

The developers also clarify their goal when it comes to presentation, over new gameplay footage of Green Arrow, Solomon Grundy, Superman, The Flash, Nightwing, Catwoman, Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, Batman and Cyborg duking it out for supremacy in destructible and malleable environments.

“Our mantra for this game has always been, ‘This is the big blockbuster summer movie that you’ve always wanted to see with superheroes,” said Concept Art Lead Pav Kovacik.

The trailer also showcases footage of super moves for Cyborg and Nightwing, which are over-the-top finishing-type moves that highlight the special abilities of each character.

“A lot of the action in ‘Injustice’ is over the top,” said game producer Hector Sanchez. “We have people grabbing cars and throwing them at people, we have people bouncing off objects in the arena. There’s nothing more cinematic in the game than our super moves. Super moves are these really big, blockbuster-y events that would probably blow out the budget on a summer blockbuster.”

The trailer also highlights environments, which include the Daily Planet, the Batcave and a new look at what looks like the Phantom Zone, accessed via the Fortress of Solitude, and the developers state that the support of DC has been invaluable to bringing the game to the next level.

“DC’s been incredibly supportive of this project and has actually been pushing us to take things farther than we ever thought we’d be able to get away with,” said Kovacik. “Superman in particular was fun to work on. We had a lot of freedom trying things as far as materials and adding little armor bits and playing with the way his logo ties into his cape, which normally you wouldn’t have the freedom to play with such an iconic character, but DC was very supportive the whole way.”

The trailer ends with a very brief tease of the Clown Prince of Crime himself, the Joker.
