Thanos will conquer theaters worldwide beginning next week, but audiences will have to wait a while longer to learn the Mad Titan's Marvel Cinematic Universe origins, in the pages of an Avengers: Infinity War tie-in novel.

Arriving in November, the canonical novel Thanos: Titan Consumed, by bestselling writer Barry Lyga, will explore the backstory of the world-conquering antagonist, who's largely lurked in the background of the MCU since 2012's The Avengers.

Set far before the events of Infinity War, the novel reveals Thanos' quiet beginnings on Titan and how he became determined to use the Infinity Gauntlet to wipe out half of all sentient life in the universe.

"We all know where Thanos is going to end up. We’ve seen the trailers. I wanted to show how we get there. It’s less about making him likable and more about making him understandable. A small distinction, perhaps, but an important one," Lyga told io9. "It’s a pretty big idea to say, 'Half the universe must die.' And then it’s a big jump to say, 'I’m the guy to do it.' And then bigger to say, 'Not only must it be done and not only am I the one to do it, but I know I can do it. And here’s how.'"
