The MCU has built up a lot of lore since it began, which had a lot of people searching through each film for every detail possible. As the franchise continued, though, there were plenty of questions opened up by the films that Marvel hadn't answered. Many people expected these questions to be answered later on in the series, especially with a movie as big as Avengers: Infinity War, but Marvel continues to impress us with their attention to detail. Despite already having a lot to do, several characters to manage, and its own villain to establish (who needed to be done perfectly, mind you), Avengers: Infinity War did answer a lot of questions people had about the MCU for years. As a culmination of the MCU, the film not only delivers on the expectations, but also delivers for those who have been digging into the lore. Whether it be be a question about the Infinity Stones or about the placement of certain characters, the movie answered a lot of them.

That said, there are some questions that weren't answered by Avengers: Infinity War. There was no way the film was going to be able to address every single question the MCU left open to interpretation. It's possible that these questions could be answered by Avengers 4, but we'll have to wait and see (some of them are all but guaranteed to be answered in that film). For now, we'll be going over 10 big MCU questions that Avengers: Infinity War answered and 10 that it didn't.

20 ANSWERED: WHAT HAPPENED TO RED SKULL?

Red Skull at his post on Vormir in Infinity War

At the end of Captain America: The First Avenger, the Red Skull doesn't pass away traditionally. Instead, a portal is opened by the Tesseract and he is sucked into it. While some presumed him long gone, others thought that he could still be lurking, due to the Tesseract being the Space Stone.

In Avengers: Infinity War, we were finally shown what happened to the founder of HYDRA. He had been sent to guard the Soul Stone for the rest of his life as punishment for trying to abuse the power of the Space Stone. Taking the appearance of a reaper hidden behind a cloak, it was a moment that surprised many viewers.

19 UNANSWERED: WHAT HAPPENED TO HAWKEYE?

Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye

There were a few notable absences in Avengers: Infinity War, and Hawkeye was one of them. During Captain America: Civil War, Hawkeye was one of the superheroes working with Captain America, and imprisoned by the government after the battle with Tony Stark. He was freed by Cap at the end of the film, but we're not sure where he went after that.

Avengers: Infinity War says something about him striking a deal to be with his family, but that doesn't exactly answer the real question. We'll likely get proper details in Avengers 4 when he makes his long-awaited reappearance after three years.

18 ANSWERED: DID WAKANDA SAVE BUCKY?

Ant-Man Civil War Bucky

The conflict of Captain America: Civil War hinged around Steve Rogers choosing to save his friend despite the fact that he was potentially guilty of killing someone important. At the end of the movie, Captain America and Bucky get away after having defeated Tony Stark and travel to Wakanda, where they were taken in by T'Challa.

It's there that the Wakandans agreed to try and cure Bucky of the mind-warping that was done to him by HYDRA. In Avengers: Infinity War, not only is Bucky cured, but he is living his own life in Wakanda. It's not long before he's called back into the fray with a vibranium arm, though.

17 UNANSWERED: HOW DID AUNT MAY REACT TO PETER'S IDENTITY?

Marisa Tomei and Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Homecoming

Aunt May in the MCU was much more protective over Peter Parker than we've ever seen in live-action. That's why it was so funny and surprising that, at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming, that May found out that her nephew was actually Spider-Man. While we do see her initial reaction (most of it, anyway), we're never told how she acts around her nephew going forward.

Avengers: Infinity War doesn't answer the question either, first showing Peter Parker on a school bus when the Children of Thanos come to New York. It's probably for the best that May wasn't in the film, though, as there were already plenty of characters.

16 ANSWERED: WHAT WAS STEVE ROGERS DOING AFTER CIVIL WAR?

Captain America stands in front of a waist-high wall, looking off into the distance

Captain America's entire world was changed in Captain America: Civil War. After choosing to save Bucky and not sign the Sokovia Accords, he was labeled a criminal by the world at large. Still, he managed to break out the Avengers that had his back and they traveled out of the public eye.

By the time Avengers: Infinity War rolls around, we get a better idea of what Cap was doing. He, Falcon, and Black Widow were traveling around the world, doing missions "incognito," still keeping the spirit of the Avengers alive. Not even the world governments could stop Cap from doing what he thought was right.

15 UNANSWERED: WHERE ARE VALKYRIE AND KORG?

At the end of Thor: Ragnarok, there is an entirely different band of brothers surrounding the God of Thunder and the Asgardians, including the likes of Valkyrie and Korg. Avengers: Infinity War opens with Thanos and his Children aboard the Asgardian ship, having taken out most of them trying to find the Space Stone.

While Thor, Loki, Heimdall, and the Hulk all tried to battle the Mad Titan, Valkyrie and Korg were nowhere to be found, despite being on the ship during Thor: Ragnarok. It's possible they escaped, but the film never directly addresses where they went or even if they survived.

14 ANSWERED: WHERE IS THE SOUL STONE?

Soul Stone

Ever since the Tesseract first appeared in the post-credit scene of Thor and as the plot device in Captain America: The First Avenger, Marvel has slowly been introducing the Infinity Stones throughout their films as they built to the inevitable coming of Thanos. Up to the release of Avengers: Infinity War, the Space, Time, Power, Reality, and Mind Stones had all been revealed in previous movies.

The only Stone that was missing from the equation was the Soul Stone. While many thought it would be revealed in Black Panther, the Stone became a major plot point in Avengers: Infinity War, as well as the source of one of its most powerful moments.

13 UNANSWERED: WHEN DID GAMORA FIND THE SOUL STONE?

During Avengers: Infinity War, Gamora and Star Lord are sharing an intimate conversation now that Thanos has essentially come out of hiding. She reveals to Quill that she knows the location of the Soul Stone and her father would come find her so she could relay the information. We later see a flashback conversation where Gamora tells Nebula that she knows where the Stone is.

However, the film fails to mention where or when Gamora got this information. It's never brought up in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, and the only Stone that mattered in the first film was the Power Stone.

12 ANSWERED: WHERE DID NEBULA GO AFTER GUARDIANS 2?

Nebula took two films to turn from a villain to an ally to the Guardians of the Galaxy. Finally repairing a relationship with her sister, Gamora, she is offered to stay with the Guardians. However, she decides to go on her own to try and find a way to kill Thanos. That said, she could've been anywhere in the cosmos.

In Avengers: Infinity War, a group of Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy take the fight to the Mad Titan on his homeworld of Titan. It's while they're fighting Thanos that Nebula shows up in a Necro Craft and flies it straight into him. Clearly, she had been waiting for her moment to strike and saw her chance.

11 UNANSWERED: WHERE WERE ANT-MAN AND THE WASP?

Ant-Man was formally introduced to the Avengers in Captain America: Civil War, where he was asked to be a part of Cap's team. After being imprisoned and freed, we're not sure what Scott Lang did after that. Avengers: Infinity War states that he made a deal with the government so that he could spend time with his daughter and not be away from her.

However, that wouldn't explain why Hope would also be absent, despite being acquainted with the Wasp suit at the time. This question is better answered in Ant-Man and the Wasp, and we'll be seeing these characters again in Avengers 4.

10 ANSWERED: HOW WERE THE AVENGERS FEELING ABOUT THE ACCORDS?

One of Captain America's biggest arguments in Civil War against the Sokovia Accords was that it was run by "people with agendas and agendas change." Nonetheless, a large enough portion of the team signed the Accords, so they were put into effect. In Avengers: Infinity War, we see the fallout of the Accords after just two years.

Established Avengers like Rhodey are feeling frustrated with having to report to narrow-minded government officials. It gets to the point where Ross wants Rhodey to arrest Steve Rogers when he returns, and he just ignores Ross and shuts down their communication, risking a court marshal.

9 UNANSWERED: HOW DID THANOS DESTROY XANDAR?

Xandar Guardians of the Galaxy

From the moment the Power Stone was given to the Nova Corps in Guardians of the Galaxy, everyone has been waiting for the moment that Thanos would come to their planet and rip it apart until he had the Stone in his hands. Avengers: Infinity War confirms that Thanos did, indeed, destroy the entire planet of Xandar, but it never shows us how it happened.

We have no doubt that the Mad Titan could've taken on the Nova Corps (if Ronan the Accuser could do it, then it would be short work for Thanos). Still, the film opens with Thanos already having the Power Stone with no explanation to his destruction of Xandar.

8 ANSWERED: HOW DID LOKI SURVIVE THE EVENTS OF THOR?

Loki in Avengers Assemble

At the end of Thor, Loki ends his crusade to become the King of Asgard by allowing himself to fall into a black hole, seemingly to never be heard from again. We all know that Loki, indeed, survived to head the attack on New York in The Avengers. However, many of us were wondering how Loki could've survived such a trip through a black hole, but Avengers: Infinity War seems to have the answer.

After Thanos kills Loki, he says, "No resurrections this time." This implies that Thanos was the one who resurrected Loki (he was also the one who gave him the spear and the Chitauri), so it makes a lot of sense.

7 UNANSWERED: WHEN DID THANOS ACQUIRE THE OUTRIDERS?

gallery-1519404428-avengers-infinity-war-wakanda

Avengers: Infinity War wasn't the first time that Thanos decided to conquer entire worlds. Many years before Tony Stark ever donned the Iron Man suit, Thanos had gone to other planets with his Chitauri army as a means of "fixing" them. However, his beloved Chitauri would meet their end in The Avengers when Tony Stark threw a massive nuke at the mothership.

During Infinity War, Thanos has an entirely new army of Outriders that he sends to attack Wakanda as a means of trying to get the Mind Stone from the Vision. However, six years is an awfully short time to get a new army, and the movie never explains where they came from.

6 ANSWERED: DID LOKI STEAL THE TESSERACT?

Loki was the one who stole the Tesseract in The Avengers, and he couldn't pass up the opportunity to do it again in Thor: Ragnarok. When he was placing Surtur's crown on the Eternal Flame, he passed by the Tesseract in Odin's treasure vault and paused to look at it momentarily. While we never see him take it, the arrival of Thanos's ship in the post-credits scene all but confirms it.

At the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War, we discover that Loki stole the Tesseract yet again, but it drew the presence of Thanos and his Children. In order to save his brother, Loki gave up the Tesseract to the Mad Titan.

5 UNANSWERED: WHAT HAPPENED TO THE GAUNTLET?

The Infinity Gauntlet was a tool specifically designed to house the power of all six Infinity Stones. The who wielded all of them could wipe out half of the universe with a snap of their fingers, which Thanos did at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. However, the Gauntlet looked all broken and burned after the snap.

Nonetheless, Thanos disappeared in a portal, taking the Gauntlet with him. Because the object was destroyed, it makes us wonder: what happened to it after that? Theoretically, the Gauntlet could be used to bring everyone back, but if it was destroyed, the Avengers are going to have to come up with a different strategy.

4 ANSWERED: DID STAR-LORD AND GAMORA BEGIN A RELATIONSHIP?

Gamora Star-Lord Guardians of the Galaxy

Peter Quill and Gamora had some attraction to each other in Guardians of the Galaxy, but it didn't become a plot point until Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. In that movie, Quill talks about some "unspoken thing" between the two of them. By the end of the film, she reciprocates those feelings, though they are never showed to do anything that delivers on it.

In Avengers: Infinity War, we see that their unspoken thing has become a bit more vocal. They openly kiss and have heart-to-heart conversations. The establishment of their relationship made it all the more powerful when Thanos killed her, causing Quill to lose his mind.

3 UNANSWERED: ARE CHARACTERS TRAPPED IN THE SOUL STONE?

Thanos arriving in Soul World from the Avengers: Infinity War movie

After Gamora was killed to unlock the Soul Stone and half of all life in the universe turned into ash, it caused a lot of people to speculate where they all went. Thanos had a vision where he spoke to a child Gamora, telling her that his goal cost everything to achieve. Some have assumed that this scene meant that, at the very least, Gamora was trapped in the Soul Stone (partially due to that whole "a soul for a soul" requirement).

We're wondering if, perhaps, all of those lives that were taken away ended up trapped in the Soul Stone as well. This one might be a bit of a stretch, as it's possible they didn't "go" anywhere at all.

2 ANSWERED: DID THE COLLECTOR KEEP THE AETHER?

Collector Aether Infinity Stone

At the end of Thor: The Dark World, the Warriors Three traveled all the way to Knowhere to give the Aether (later confirmed to be the Reality Stone) to the Collector. In Guardians of the Galaxy, the Guardians try to sell the Power Stone to him as well. However, the Power Stone causes his facility to be destroyed, leaving him feeling defeated.

This made many of us wonder if he still had the Aether or if it had been sent somewhere else as a result of the explosion. Avengers: Infinity War confirmed that the Reality Stone was on Knowhere, including a scene where the Guardians try to get there before Thanos to get the Stone.

1 UNANSWERED: WHY DID THANOS WAIT SO LONG?

Thanos in Infinity War

Thanos was first revealed in the post-credits scene of The Avengers was the individual who gave Loki the scepter and lent him the Chitauri. Despite sending the God of Mischief to retrieve the Tesseract for him, it was six years before Thanos decided to get out of his chair and find the Infinity Stones himself.

The one question that Avengers: Infinity War didn't answer was why he waited so long to get moving. Furthermore, if he was so strong that he could've destroyed Xandar himself, busted into Knowhere, and take on all of the Asgardians, what was stopping him from grabbing the stones years earlier?
