Marvel Studios' Avengers: Infinity War was sure to be a massive success for the studio, especially given the six years it spent readying viewers for the impending arrival of the Mad Titan, Thanos. And yet, few expected it to beat out Star Wars: The Force Awakens for the biggest domestic opening ever by a mere $10 million.
Even more impressive? The film managed to open to $640 million at the worldwide box office -- with a China release still weeks out. With such a massive haul, naturally, the film was bound to break a few records. And now, with the official numbers in, we can take a look at each and every record Infinity War broke over the weekend.
Biggest Domestic Opening of All-Time
Final domestic opening: $258.2 million
Like with February's Black Panther, box office estimates for Avengers: Infinity War were all over the place. At first, it was unknown if the film would cross $200 million -- like its predecessor, Avengers: Age of Ultron. However, as audiences continued to show interest in the feature, predictions began to rise and the film looked to be eyeing a $225 million opening stateside, with experts predicting it'd become the second highest opening of all time. Of course, that didn't happen. Word of mouth continued to grow over the weekend, and audiences kept coming, eager to see what Thanos had in store for our favorite heroes. By Saturday night, it'd become clear that against all odds, Avengers: Infinity War had beaten The Force Awakens' prior record of $248 million by an impressive $10 million.
Biggest Worldwide Opening of All-Time
And while the film's domestic opening is nothing to shrug off, its worldwide haul is even more astounding. Over the course of opening weekend, Avengers: Infinity War secured a massive $640.9 million -- beating out the previous record holder, The Fate of the Furious by $100 million. Interestingly enough, though, because the film won't open in China until mid-May, The Fate of the Furious still holds the title of Top International Opening.
Biggest Superhero Opening of All Time Stateside
When you're considered one of the biggest franchises in Hollywood, it isn't entirely surprising when you become your own competition. Prior to the release of Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel Studios' The Avengers held the prior record for biggest superhero opening of all-time with $207.4 million. After the film's massive domestic opening, though, Infinity War now holds that title with $258.2 million. However, while the film has the biggest superhero opening of all time stateside, Warner Bros. and DC still have the biggest global opening for a superhero film with Batman v. Superman's $422.5 million opening.
Biggest Saturday of All-Time in North America
Leading up to the biggest domestic opening of all-time was the biggest Saturday of all-time in North America. After earning over $100 million on Friday -- making for the second biggest Friday of all-time, behind The Force Awakens -- the film went on to earn an additional $83 million on Saturday more than likely driven by word of mouth. Universal's Jurassic World held the prior record with $69.6 million.
Biggest Sunday of All-Time in North America
Word of mouth also helped to drive the Sunday box office to the biggest Sunday of all-time stateside with $69.2 million after a measly 16% dip, which is nearly $10 million ahead of Star Wars: The Force Awakens' $60 million prior record.
Biggest Opening of All-Time in Multiple International Markets
And while Infinity War has broken plenty of records in North America, the film has achieved a fair amount of success overseas, too. Infinity War managed to score the highest debuts ever in South Korea ($39.2 million), Mexico ($25.1 million), Brazil ($18.8 million), the Philippines ($12.5 million), Thailand ($10 million), Indonesia ($9.6 million) and Malaysia ($8.4 million). It also secured the second highest debut in India with $18.6 million, where it has also managed to score the biggest opening for a Western film ever, as well as out-earning the entire runs of The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War.
The film also secured the best start for a superhero film in France with $17.7 million, Germany with $14.7 million, and Spain with $8.3 million.
Other Notable Achievements
While not the biggest opening of all-time in Australia, Infinity War did secure the second highest opening with $23 million, behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It also managed to secure the second-best superhero opening of all time in Italy with $11 million.
