WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War, in theaters now.

According to Avengers: Infinity War co-director Joe Russo, fans have someone else they can blame for all the casualties at the end of the movie -- and it's not the Mad Titan. Heartbroken fans should also point fingers at Thor, the king of Asgard, for his moment of arrogance in the film's game-changing finale.

"I would argue that the fan base could be equally upset with Thor, who chose to throw that ax into Thanos chest and not his head, because he wanted to tell Thanos that he got his revenge," Russo told ComicBook.com.

"Had he gone for a kill shot, that snap would not have happened," he added. "These are choices that characters who are feeling immense pain make and hopefully, the audience can learn to empathize with those characters because they can grow through stories."

In the final battle, Thor lodged Stormbreaker into Thanos' chest, as he wanted to gloat before he dealt the death blow. Thor chose to remind Thanos of the promise he made to kill him in Infinity War's opening sequence and taunted the Mad Titan that this was his comeuppance for killing Heimdall and the Asgardians. However, Thanos ended up with the last laugh. With a gasp of "You should have gone for the head," he snapped half the galaxy out of existence using the combined power of the Infinity Stones and then retreated. It's a decision the Asgardian will likely come to regret, but one he'll hopefully get a chance to make amends for in Avengers 4.
