WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War, in theaters now.

A popular theory surrounding the ending of Avengers: Infinity War placed Gamora as being trapped within the Soul Stone, a theory that was seemingly confirmed by the Russo brothers last week during a surprise appearance at Iowa City High School. However, the directorial pair has now clarified their original comments, seemingly debunking this theory for good.

In an interview with ComicBook.com, the Russo brothers elaborated on their original response to being asked about Gamora's fate at the end of Infinity War, noting that the excitement over their comments was "a misinterpretation," and that Thanos' vision of a young Gamora was, in fact, "a spiritual representation of her."

"The power that it took Thanos to click his fingers, he's so dramatic that if you look closely at the film and the damage of the gauntlet," Joe Russo said. "You look closely at the very last scene, it damages his arm dramatically. And that moment when he clicks his fingers sends him into this ethereal plane inside of the Soul Stone where as part of his quote unquote hero's journey in the film, he has one last moment to convey a sense of guilt about what he's done. It illustrates what a complicated character he is. So, to clarify, it's a spiritual representation of her and obviously that's something that the Soul Stone has power to do. But really it's there to illustrate his pain and his guilt. I wouldn't read much more into it beyond that."

Gamora being trapped within the Soul Stone was not the only theory surrounding the Soul Stone and Soul World spawned by the epic ending of Infinity War. There were other theories suggesting that Thanos himself is within the Soul World at the end of the film when he looks upon the sunset after wiping out half of all life in the universe, and that the ending of the film all but guarantees the arrival of Adam Warlock to the MCU -- a character teased at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. However, the Russo brothers' clarification has not only debunked Gamora's soul being trapped within the stone, but also any theories suggesting Thanos is in the Soul World as well.
