Fans shouldn't get their hopes up, because it doesn't appear that the Silver Surfer will arrive in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Avengers: Infinity War.

A purported cast listing for the ensemble film appeared in March on Metacritic, listing Curt Clendenin as the Silver Surfer, igniting rumors that elements of the Fantastic Four franchise might be integrated into Marvel Studios films well ahead of Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox's key assets.

While the character played an important role alongside Doctor Strange in Marvel's Infinity Gauntlet comics crossover, Infinity War's directors have dismissed the possibility of his involvement in the ensemble film.

"I don’t think we own Silver Surfer," Joe Russo told Yahoo! Movies. "But it’s fan-wish fulfillment and, you know, if this Disney-Fox deal goes through there’s going to be a lot more characters coming into the Marvel universe, so some of those crazy fan theories might come true."

That said, their comments about crazy fan theories implies that at least some out-there assumptions could come true. Also, while the Silver Surfer might not get his time to shine in Infinity War, the Russos don't mention anything about next year's Avengers 4. With the Fox-Disney merger pending, the likes of the X-Men and the Fantastic Four have all been tipped for an appearance in either Infinity War or Avengers 4, however, Marvel Studios has been keen to remind fans that it isn't ready to happen just yet.

Away from the Silver Surfer's appearance in 2007's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Fox is still supposed to be working on a standalone movie for the character.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Paul Bettany, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chadwick Boseman, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Tom Hiddleston and Josh Brolin, among others. The film hits theaters April 27.
