WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Infinite Frontier: Secret Files #4 by Brandon Thomas, Joshua Williamson, Inaki Miranda, Nick Filardi and Tom Napolitano, on sale now.

In the lead-up to Infinite Frontier, DC's newest powerhouse team, The Totality. This clandestine group of individuals, similar to Marvel's Illuminati, committed to ensuring that Infinite Frontier's new omniverse doesn't undergo any more reality-altering crises. Though the strange assortment of individuals that make up the Totality have different reasons for joining, Talia al Ghul's is perhaps the saddest.

In this story, the Totality of Earth-0 has an accidental run-in with the Totality of Earth-23. This prompts Earth-0's Martian Manhunter to test whether one of the members of his Totality has been replaced by one of the members of Earth-23's Totality. He asks each of them why they joined the team. Whilst many of the members are there out of curiosity, Talia al Ghul's reasoning comes down to her son -- Damian Wayne.

Talia tells her fellow teammates that she is here because she believes that reality has already been manipulated. She believes that this altering of reality is why her son, Damian, chose his father, Batman, over her. She just can't accept that the rejection could in any way be the natural order of the universe. She joined the Totality to make certain that any reality-altering events don't tear a mother and son apart in the way she believes it did with her and Damian.

Talia first introduced Damian to his father in Batman #656 by Grant Morrison, Andy Kubert, Dave Stewart and Nick J. Napolitano. Talia gave Batman custody of their child because she said she could no longer control Damian and hoped that Batman could. This arrangement ended up working against Talia however, as Damian eventually came around to his father's way of thinking.

When Damian became Robin to Dick Grayson's Batman, Talia saw that she was losing her son and came up with a rather drastic plan to get him back. She placed implants in her son's spine that allowed him to be controlled, hijacking his body in an attempt to kill Dick Grayson and "free" her son. When Damian found out, he told her that he wanted to stay a part of the Bat-family rather than be a part of hers. He told her she had been emotionally distant his entire life, unlike his new family. Only when Damian was killed in the New 52 Batman Inc. by Grant Morrison and Chris Burnham did Talia finally show her emotions -- though only briefly.

The recent "Demon or Detective?" backup story from Batman #106 and Detective Comics #1034 by Joshua Williamson, Gleb Melnikov and ALW's Troy Peteri saw Damian come back to his mother after falling out with his father. Even though she tells the Totality she wants her son back, she accuses Damian of only returning to her because he couldn't cut it as Robin. Despite essentially calling her son an unworthy failure, she gives Damian the choice again: "Demon or Detective?" Though she initially believes she has her son back, he leaves again, revealing that underneath his "Demon" attire he was always wearing a Robin costume.

Though Talia shows the Totality genuine heartbreak over her son leaving, the fact that she believes it was down to some multiversal meddling shows she still hasn't doesn't understand why Damian left. Despite being told she was too emotionally distant before, when Damian returned to her in "Demon or Detective?" she believed her mistake was being too emotional. This rare show of emotion from Talia shows she still hasn't accepted why Damian left. However, if she doesn't stop looking for excuses and realize her mistakes as a mother, she will never get her son back.
