In the aftermath of Dark Nights: Death Metal, the heroes and villains of the DC Universe found themselves exposed to a greater universe than they ever knew existed. They're now a part of the omniverse, a seemingly endless and eternally expanding collection of worlds and realities. To contend with this, a small group has been assembled of heroes and villains, operating more or less as the DC's equivalent of Marvel's Illuminati.

Known as the Totality and with a roster split of heroes (Martian Manhunter, Hawkgirl, and Mister Terrific) and villains (Lex Luthor, Talia Al Ghul, and Vandal Savage), the group is dedicated to protecting the core-DC Universe from threats they could never expect or handle otherwise. But it turns out they aren't the only Totality in existence, as revealed by a surprise confrontation with the Earth-23 incarnation of the same team. While this might seem like a good discovery, it also sets up the potential for a lot of complications among the heroes of multiple worlds going forward.

In Infinite Frontier #4, the group decides to test-run their newest device, an invention that could serve as an early-detection system designed to detect breaches in the fabric of time and space -- effectively working as the ultimate warning system in case of attacks from other universes. However, it turns out the Earth-23 version of the Totality was in the same process at the same time -- resulting in the Earth-0 Totality being teleported to another Earth alongside the other Totality. A battle quickly breaks out between the two teams in the chaos of the misunderstanding -- except for the two versions of the Martian Manhunter, who monitor the situation and determine there must be a peaceful way to settle their dispute.

Although the fight is halted, the Superman of Earth-23 -- Calvin Ellis, aka President Superman -- discovers the existence of the teams and ends up confronting them about it. Ultimately though, the Earth-0 totality is able to help send their counterparts back to their home reality while also upgrading the tech to keep other versions of the Totality from encountering each other in the same way -- and receive some advice on how to deal with the problem of their own Superman eventually learning of their existence. This suggests that the Totality could be a major force across multiple univeres -- and could end up coming into conflict with one another over the fates of realities.

This suggests that entire realities are preparing for battles with one another, with the Totality becoming an increasing constant in the Omniverse. In theory, this could be a real boon. Like Justice Incarnate -- a multiversal Justice League united behind Calvin Ellis -- the Totality could become a chief protector of multiple universes, handling the threats no one world could contend with. But this could also lead to serious conflict down the line -- especially if in the future that say, the Totality of the crime-ridden Earth-3 or the Nazi-controlled Earth-X differs from those of other heroic realities and sets off conflict. Likewise, the apparent multiversal disappointment with the concept held by Supermen implies darkness to the concept -- and could eventually lead to a conflict between Justice Incarnate and the Totality.

For an example of how this could go down poorly for the DC Universe, multiple versions of the Marvel's Illuminati were introduced during the build-up to Secret Wars. Among them was a largely heroic group of heroes known as the Great Society who confronted the Illuminati over their willingness to prepare for any scenario when it came down to Incursions -- including building planet-busting bombs. The 616-Illuminati eventually was forced to murder the Society and then destroy their world to save their own, which was a major breaking point for the team. If this fate awaits the Totality, then it could be another version of the group that is their ultimate downfall -- leaving the DC Universe and potentially even the Omniverse in the hands of threats like a re-empowered Darkseid.
