WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Swamp Thing #1, by Ram V, Mike Perkins, Mike Spicer and Aditya Bidikar, on sale now.

While Alec Holland may be the character who is most associated with serving as the basis for Swamp Thing's personality and his occasional human host, Infinite Frontier has kicked off by introducing a new champion of the Green, with Holland and his legacy nowhere to be found. Instead, there's a new Swamp Thing defending the DC Universe, called away from his home in India to the United States for a grisly supernatural mystery.

And while much of this new Swamp Thing's backstory is still shrouded in mystery, here's what the opening issue of the Infinite Frontier relaunched title has revealed about its new protagonist.

Swamp Thing Levi

The new Swamp Thing is an Indian man named Levi Kamei flying from New Dehli to New York City, suffering from visions of his plant-based other half threatening to grow out of control and endanger all of his fellow passengers. Flashbacks to Levi's past reveal that his connection to the Green may have to do with his family history: At some point, Levi's brother is implied to have made a dark deal with mystical forces. While the specifics of this magical transaction are still unknown, Levi's less scrupulous sibling may have performed a dark ritual, forcibly bonding his brother with the Green to make him the new Swamp Thing for his own nefarious ends. Levi is coming to America to leave that tragic, familial past behind him.

The creative team of Ram V and Mike Perkins previously explored the Swamp Thing mythos in one of the darker timelines glimpsed in Future State. A Swamp Thing that had lost his connection to humanity had overrun the planet after a mysterious cataclysm consumed the heroes and villains that once populated it. In absence of this human tether and family, this avatar of the Green created his own plant-based family as living extensions of himself. Whether this alternate future Swamp Thing is a Levi that lost himself completely to the Green or a different manifestation of the plant kingdom was never confirmed.

In comparison to other identities and avatars Swamp Thing has been associated with, Levi compares most directly to Alec Holland and his dynamic with Swamp Thing at the start of the New 52 era in 2011. Shortly before the New 52 began, Holland was resurrected by the White Lantern's light at the end of Brightest Day to be the living avatar of the Green rather than a sentient plant that contained Holland's memories and personality. Similar to Levi, the resurrected Holland was haunted by visions of Swamp Thing while plants reacted strangely around him. Eventually, as Anton Arcane resurfaced to menace the DCU, Holland surrendered himself to wholly become Swamp Thing once more.

Swamp Thing Levi 2

Levi Kamei is a man who is torn between his tragic past life in India and the strange, plant-based figure he has become. Whereas Holland's origins as Swamp Thing were borne from murder and shady business dealings, Levi's backstory appears to revolve around family drama and its links to the occult.

Although Levi is able to keep the sheer, overpowering nature of the Green in check for now, the new Swamp Thing is about to face his first major test against something terrifying stalking human prey throughout the American Southwest in a showdown that is sure to be remembered.
