WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the story "Epilogue" from Infinite Frontier #0 by Joshua Williamson, John Romita Jr., Klaus Janson and Brad Anderson, on sale now

DC's Infinite Frontier is just getting going, but there are already some dark clouds on the horizon of the DC Universe's new dawn. From the Superman family to another apparent Joker assault on Gotham to danger on the horizon for teams like the Teen Titans and Green Lanterns, there are many unpredictable surprises in store.

However, Infinite Frontier #0 ends with the biggest shock of the era so far, as DC's most powerful villain, Darkseid, officially becomes its ultimate god killer by killing every member of the all-powerful Quintessence.

Before Darkseid's attack, this story focuses on Wonder Woman, Diana of Themyscira, observing the Omniverse with the Quintessence, the pantheon of higher beings including Hera, Phantom Stranger, Spectre, Highfather, Ganthet and the Wizard Shazam. Following Dark Nights: Death Metal, reality has been rebuilt, and Wonder Woman sees what possibilities are in store after Future State.

The group wants her to join them in a watcher's position, as they think she's fulfilled her obligation and has to ascend to this special godhood. However, Diana turns the job down since she wants to play an active role in the wonders awaiting Earth's heroes and senses a looming threat.

After she leaves, though, it gets dark as the team arrives on Earth Omega, which they failed to tell her is a prison. Their plans are suddenly rocked when a black wave starts piercing them and killing them off. It turns out this is a new-look Darkseid who escaped this jail, commanding the shadows, calling himself "The End."

Darkseid is a particularly scary sight, looking more intimidating than ever before. He reveals he's been reconstituted from all other Darkseids when reality collapsed and reformed, making him the biggest, baddest and deadliest version of the character, literally. This dark New God is a veritable titan and declares that he's going to terminate all of creation, making a huge step up from wanting to oppress and control everyone with the Anti-Life Equation. The fact he impales the pantheon with minimal effort in seconds doesn't bode well at all, casting a dark shadow on the bold era ahead.

This horrific, merciless rebirth kicks Jack Kirby's iconic villain up a notch, and there's no telling how the multiversal Justice Incarnate, the Totality or the Justice League will be able to deal with him in the upcoming Infinite Frontier series. Darkseid's now a true slayer of gods, not a petty dictator or a giant with a grudge, and it may well signal an unstoppable apocalypse.

Infinite Frontier #1 by Joshua Williamson and Xermanico with covers by Mitch Gerads goes on sale June 22 from DC. Infinite Frontier #0 is on sale now.
