A new entry in Sucker Punch Productions' long-dormant Infamous franchise may make an appearance at the upcoming PlayStation game showcase, according to a report from an inside source and a quiet update to the series' website.According to XboxEra co-founder Nick Baker, Sucker Punch Productions, famed for developing iconic PlayStation franchises including Ghost of Tsushima and Sly Cooper, might soon revive its open-world superhero action series, Infamous. As reported on Twitter, fans may see the open-world superhero game during Sony's PlayStation 5 showcase scheduled for Sep. 9.Related: Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut: How to Transfer Your Existing Save to PS5

The rumor has since gained traction across the internet, as several fans also noted that the official Infamous website received a domain update earlier this summer. While the update may have been standard maintenance on Sucker Punch's part, its timing has reignited fan speculation about the fate of the Infamous saga.

Regarding the possible Infamous news, Baker warned fans to take the rumor with a grain of salt. "It's one of the things I couldn't get confirmed. But because I like the series I'm hoping it's true," tweeted Baker. "But there's a chance we could see Infamous make a return at Sony's showcase. Fingers crossed."

While the reports have yet to be verified, Baker has a track record of reporting early information on Sucker Punch developments. Earlier this year, Baker leaked details about new Ghost of Tsushima content that would eventually become the game's Director's Cut. The insider has also tweeted that a new Sly Cooper game may be in development as well, possibly outside of Sucker Punch. This rumor is also currently unverified.

Multiple Twitter users responded to the potential leak by pointing out that Sony updated the website domain for infamousthegame.com in June of this year. Game publishers regularly update their domains to ensure no one else snags their ownership, and this year's update was likely part of a routine process. However, the update still proved to PlayStation fans that Sony and Sucker Punch haven't forgotten about the Infamous franchise, despite the series not receiving a new entry in over seven years.

Sucker Punch first kicked off their superhero franchise with the release of Infamous in 2009 on the PlayStation 3. Infamous 2 followed in 2011, along with the vampire-themed spinoff Infamous: Festival of Blood. Following the launch of the PlayStation 4, Sucker Punch released Infamous: Second Son and a prequel expansion, Infamous: First Light, in 2014. Since then, the fan-favorite franchise has been dormant, sitting out the release of the PlayStation 5. While the series didn't always receive the critical acclaim of a title like Ghost of Tsushima, Infamous is beloved by fans for its open-world sandbox environments and its dynamic morality system that allowed players to shape their stories as either heroes or villains.

Sony has remained silent about what fans can expect from the PlayStation Showcase 2021, only that it will feature updates from PlayStation Studios and other developers releasing PS5 games this holiday season and beyond. The broadcast will stream live on YouTube and Twitch starting at 1:00 p.m. Pacific Time / 4:00 p.m. EST / 9:00 p.m. BST / 10:00 p.m. CEST, and will last about 40 minutes.
