French filmmaker Fabrice Mathieu loves movies, and in addition to creating his own original shorts, (check out his entry on IMDb.com), he also likes to make mash-ups of his own cinematic favourites. His latest, gives the opening sequence from the Indiana Jones film “Raiders of the Lost Ark” a distinctly “Star Wars” twist.
Entitled “Raiders of the Lost Dark”, the short doesn’t focus on plot as much as the delight to be found in inserting “Star Wars” characters and footage into “Raiders'” classic opening scenes as Indy attempts to retrieve a golden idol in the form of C3-PO’s head.
Much of the fun lies in the anticipation of what “Star Wars” reference will come tumbling out next – the sudden appearances of the Death Star and the Ewoks are unexpected but fit the sequence superbly and Mathieu has also managed to tie elements from the John Williams scores for the two franchises together so seamlessly you almost struggle to tell them apart.
And if you like this mash-up, you can find more of Mathieu’s work on his Vimeo page, which includes both original work and another mash-up entitled “Darth by Darthwest,” which sees a stoic Cary Grant looking distinctly unimpressed alongside R2-D2 and C3-PO on the Millennium Falcon.
