Composer John Williams, whose iconic Star Wars and Indiana Jones scores have delighted fans for close to five decades, has claimed that Harrison Ford is expected to retire from acting after Indiana Jones 5.

In an interview with AP News, Williams suggested that the upcoming fifth installment in the action-adventure franchise would mark Ford's last time acting in a film. "At the moment I’m working on Indiana Jones 5, which Harrison Ford — who’s quite a bit younger than I am — I think has announced will be his last film. So, I thought: If Harrison can do it, then perhaps I can, also," the composer revealed. At the time of writing, Ford has not publicly announced his retirement.

Ford first appeared as Dr. Henry Jones, Jr./Indiana Jones in 1981's Raiders of the Lost Ark. The actor reprised the role in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008). Ford recently wrapped filming on the fifth film in the franchise, which may or may not be titled Indy, in February 2022. A first look at Ford in the upcoming sequel was released the following May.

A fifth Indiana Jones film has been in development since 2016. Steven Spielberg, who directed the first four films, was originally attached to return as the director of Indiana Jones 5 but stepped down in early 2020. He remains attached as an executive producer. Logan director James Mangold was later hired to helm the upcoming sequel as well as co-write a new script. The film will mark Ford's last time playing the character. The sequel may also be the last time fans see Indiana Jones in a live-action project after Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy stated no one else could play the role. "We would never make Indiana Jones without Harrison Ford," Kennedy said in May 2022. "Having just finished the fifth movie, I can tell you, there wasn't a day I wasn't on set where I wasn't like, 'Yes -- this is Indiana Jones.'"
