Who's in Indiana Jones 5?

There's little known about the upcoming film, though there are a few details about the characters. Waller-Bridge's character is reportedly a grifter and major player in the movie, with some fans speculating she might take up Indy's mantle. Banderas recently revealed he plays a minor role, "almost a cameo," in the film as a concerned friend to Indy. Mikkelsen, meanwhile, plays a Nazi named Voller, inspired by the real-life Werner von Braun, who went from being a Nazi to becoming a NASA engineer.

As for Indy, director James Mangold explained the film would be Ford's Swan Song as Indiana Jones and force the titular hero to confront his mortality. "It became really important to me to figure out how to make this a movie about a hero at sunset," he explained. "The issues I brought up about Indy's age were not things I thought were being addressed in the material being developed at the time. There were 'old' jokes, but the material itself wasn't about it. To me, whatever your greatest liability, you should fly straight towards that. If you try to pretend it's not there, you end up getting slings and arrows the whole way."

Indiana Jones 5 Was Lost in Development Hell

Development for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny began shortly after the release of the fourth film in the franchise, the attempted reboot Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in 2008. It suffered numerous delays over the last 14 years, though production began to ramp up suddenly a couple of years ago. Since then, fans have relied on speculation and photographs from the set to piece together any plot details about Indy's final film. Many speculated that Indiana Jones 5 involves a time travel plot due to the appearance of period-accurate Roman Gladiators in some scenes.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is currently scheduled to release on June 30, 2023.
