The first look at the concept art and costumes for Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Mads Mikkelsen’s characters in the untitled fifth Indiana Jones film was unveiled at the D23 Expo 2022.

At first glance, Indiana Jones fans would be forgiven for thinking D23 was displaying old concept art and costumes from Raiders of the Lost Ark as the ensembles bear a striking resemblance to the ones worn by Karen Allen's Marion Ravenwood and Ronald Lacey's Major Arnold Toht, respectively, in the 1981 film. Waller-Bridge will play a character named Helena in Indiana Jones 5, described by the film's composer John Williams as "an adventurer and a femme fatale." Mikkelsen, meanwhile, is rumored to be playing the film's mysterious Nazi villain.

A fifth Indiana Jones film was originally announced in 2016 but, due to multiple delays, production on the sequel did not commence until June 2021. Mikkelsen has previously expressed how delighted he was at the opportunity to work alongside franchise star Harrison Ford as he reprised one of his most iconic roles. "Every day of shooting felt like a real Indiana Jones film," he said in Aug. 2022. "It felt like going back to scratch. Everything looked like it. Harrison was there wearing his [Indiana Jones] clothes. It was just a brilliant experience."

Indiana Jones 5 Will Be Badass

Boyd Holbrook, who also stars in the upcoming sequel, has assured fans that Indiana Jones 5 "is going to be badass," while praising the film's director James Mangold, who he previously worked with on 2017's Logan. "You know, just look at his work: Ford v Ferrari, it’s gonna be fast, it’s gonna be badass, and it’s gonna have heart. All of his films have this emotional beat in them, but we’ve got this grand scale of Indiana Jones," the actor explained. "The guy just can’t make a bad movie. He is so precise in what he does."

While Indiana Jones 5 plot details are scarce, the film is reportedly set in the 1960s and revolves around the Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union. The film will mark not only Ford's last time playing the character but also possibly the last time fans see Indiana Jones in a live-action project as Lucasfilm has stated that it "would never make Indiana Jones without Harrison Ford."

Indiana Jones 5 also stars Antonio Banderas, Boyd Holbrook, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Toby Jones and Thomas Kretschmann. The film, which still lacks an official title, opens in theaters on June 30, 2023.
