"Independence Day: Resurgence" screenwriter Carter Blanchard will adapt "Steelheart," the first novel in Brandon Sanderon's "The Reckoners" young-adult fantasy trilogy. Deadline reports that Fox is developing the project for Shawn Levy to direct.

Published in 2013, "Steelheart" introduces a post-apocalyptic world where the appearance of a comet bestows random people with superhuman abilities. Referred to as "Epics" by an awed public, they succumb to a desire to enslave the populace, with one superhuman named Steelheart installing himself as emperor. The only ones opposing the Epics are the Reckoners, ordinary humans who spend their lives studying their super-powered oppressors, finding their weaknesses and then killing them.

The novel centers on David, who hopes to join the resistance movement because Steelheart killed his father.

Levy is also attached to produce through his 21 Laps banner.
