"It Follows" star Maika Monroe will play the female lead in "Independence Day 2," director Roland Emmerich announced Monday.

She joins a cast that includes franchise veterans Bill Pullman, Vivica A. Fox, Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch and Brent Spiner, and fellow newcomers Jessie Usher, Liam Hemsworth, Joey King, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Travis Tope.

Although no details have been revealed about Monroe's role, TheWrap suggests she'll likely play the daughter of Pullman's former President Thomas J. Whitmore, and the love interest of Hemsworth's character.

The original "Independence Day" opened in 1996, grossing more than $817 million worldwide. The sequel arrives June 24, 2016.
