Following character descriptions and the reveal that Darth Vader will have a role in the film, Entertainment Weekly has unleashed a new salvo of "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" pictures. The images focus on the film's heroes and villains, and shed new light on the anthology film's plot.
As seen above and below, the film will star both the classic Stormtroopers as well as the all-black Deathtrooper squadron. In one image, a Deathtrooper is holding a Stormtrooper doll. The doll will, reportedly, play a role in the story.
The images also show Ben Mendelsohn's character, Director Orson Krennic; the Imperial officer is in charge of the Death Star's security. Lucasfilm's head of story Kiri Hart compared Krennic to classic Imperial Grand Moff Tarkin, saying that "Krennic runs a little hotter than [Tarkin], so that’s kind of fun and it’s a little bit different... He is unpredictable and volatile.”
The ragtag Rebel squad also appears in a few photos. One of Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) reveals more of her mission -- infiltrate the Empire to steal information about the Death Star. Riz Ahmed's pilot character Bodhi Rook also gets an image, and you can see he's wearing an Imperial jumpsuit.
Fellow Rebels Baze (Jiang Wen) and Chirrut (Donnie Yen) can be seen taking a breather on the beach. Speaking of the beach, director Gareth Edwards said that the unnamed world -- which is in close proximity to the Death Star -- "subconsciously leads into some of the imagery associated with World War II." Additionally, there's also a behind the scenes still that shows off the Rebel's Yavin-4 base, previously seen in 1977's "Star Wars."
Set outside of the main sequel trilogy that began with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” “Rogue One” is set just before 1977’s “Star Wars” and details the Rebel plot to steal the Death Star plans from the Empire. Directed by Gareth Edwards (“Godzilla,” “Monsters”) from a script by Gary Whitta and Chris Weitz, “Rogue One” stars Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Donnie Yen, Forest Whitaker, Diego Luna and Riz Ahmed.
“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” opens December 16.
