Fighting monsters and legendary beasts in epic ways in games always makes you feel powerful. Immortals: Fenyx Rising will offer this sort of gameplay in the literal sense, as players will be taking on tons of enemies from Greek mythology as the gods watch your adventures.

Unfortunately, the game doesn't launch until December, but there are others to satiate this desire to fight legends and be thrown into mythological worlds until then.

Apotheon

Available on PlayStation 4 and PC

Though it's five years old, this game holds up well in terms of graphics and gameplay. Apotheon is a 2D action platformer done in an ancient Greek mural art style. It definitely stands out among others in the genre, and like Immortals: Fenyx Rising, it's entirely based around Greek mythology. You play as Nikandreos, a warrior living in a time of peril where the Gods are disappointed in humanity and decide to punish them by depriving them of basic needs to live.

With food, water and even light scarce on Earth, war and destruction break out, and the hero's village is one of many places struck by this blight. There is a lot of depth to the story, and several mythological figures and Greek tales are told throughout. As Nikandreos, you must explore and fight your way past legendary beasts and even Gods using a variety of weapons to your advantage. There are also puzzles and items of legend to help you on your way. Not only is Apotheon a great game, but the art style is unique and memorable.

Okami

Okami Alternate Artwork

Available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC

Originally released on older consoles like the Wii and PlayStation 2, Okami was remastered and re-released on current-gen consoles and PC -- and with good reason. This adventure game is Legend of Zelda-esque and rich with Japanese lore from the Shinto religion while also having a unique art style and great gameplay. You play as a god in a classic good versus evil story.  The main character is Amaterasu, Goddess of the Sun in the form of a white wolf, who has returned to the world because the evil serpent Orochi was awakened and spread darkness across the land after years of slumber following its defeat.

As Amaterasu, you gain a power called the Celestial Brush, which allows you to turn the world into a canvas and paint on the screen. Different strokes have different powers that can help with combat and puzzles. It's one of the core mechanics and a pretty unique one. The goal is to defeat demons following Orochi and, eventually, Orochi himself to restore the land and its people to their true form. Okami plays like newer Zelda titles, but it's wildly different and able to stand on its own.

God of War

Available on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4

The iconic Greek mythology series has recently branched out to Norse mythology, and while the God of War franchise spans several console generations, remasters and the newer games can still be found fairly easily and mostly tie into each other. The story follows Kratos, who started off as a Spartan soldier given a task by the Goddess Athena, who eventually becomes the God of War. His story was continually entwined with other Gods and epics.

The newest game (which shares a title with the original) puts Kratos in Midgard, where he travels the nine realms after the death of his wife and is thrown into Norse mythology. The action-focused game sees Kratos fighting legendary monsters and even Gods in epic battles. There's platforming and occasionally puzzles, but God of War is mainly about the awe of the adventure in the vein of Greek mythological heroes like Hercules or Odysseus. God of War is sure to fill the need for deep Greek mythology until Immortals: Fenyx Rising.

Apsulov: End of Gods

Available on PC

Apsulov: End of Gods combines Norse Mythology and science fiction horror, taking place in a future where humanity uses ancient artifacts and technology to exploit the nine realms via Yggdrasil, the World Tree. When an artifact that was never meant to be found is uncovered, technology is infected and the world is brought to ruin.

You awake as Alice in a sanctuary and must discover what happened while finding out who you are. Along the way, you'll encounter gods in the guises of people who help you in unusual ways. Unlike many horror games which simply involve story or scares, Apsulov has combat and puzzles. It's horror and mystery with hints of DOOM as enemies from the various Norse realms come out to play. It's definitely a game that stands out among the mythological sub-genre, and its story leaves room for a sequel.

Onimusha

Games Onimusha Warlords Remaster Undead Fighting

Available on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, PC and Xbox One

This series originally debuted on the PlayStation 2 and was dormant for years until the recent remaster of the very first game, Onimusha: Warlords. Originally created as a spin-off of the Resident Evil series, Onimusha has gameplay similarities like stationary cameras, classic tank controls and a survival horror style that's a bit more forgiving since the main characters don't use guns.

Onimusha is set in the Sengoku period of Japanese history with civil war as the backdrop to the games' mythological horror. Humans are there to help or contribute to the story, but you'll mainly be fighting Oni (or demons) and undead while completing puzzles. The main character in each game is different, but they all fight using swords and occasionally magic gained through progression. It's plays like a classic Resident Evil game but set in historic Japan and entwined with Japanese mythology.
