Too bad they changed the adjective to Hulk’s ongoing because this book has been simply incredible. None of us knew what was happening to the Jade Giant at first—he’d been killed in 'Civil War II', but got revived a bit later in 'Avengers: No Surrender', a comic which would acknowledge the damage Hulk had taken over the years and finally make the character what most superheroes are: immortal.

Since then, Al Ewing has taken us on a terrifying journey through Hulk’s mind and his history. He’s left no stone unturned, relying on old villains like the Abomination and the Leader while also incorporating past Hulk forms. It’s been a crazy ride, and here are ten things we still aren’t able to believe happened.

10 BRUCE WAS KILLED IN THE FIRST ISSUE

Immortal Hulk has ramped up into some pretty insane things since it’s launch, but even going back to the first issue the tone is set almost immediately; one minute Bruce is browsing around in a gas station, trying (and failing) to remain low-key, when a robbery goes horribly wrong, and next he’s got a hole in his head.

Ewing set the tone immediately. Bruce can “recover” from anything, once it becomes night. Because the night is “his” time. As for the person who killed Bruce? The less said, the better.

9 HULK BEING SCARED

Immortal Hulk isn’t just one thing. It takes place in the Marvel Universe, so it’s still a superhero book. It’s also a horror book. But every truly memorable Hulk run is psychological in basis. So when a being took over Sasquatch’s body that pretended to be Hulk’s father, we got a brief glimpse of something we’ve never seen in the Hulk: fear.

It didn’t last long, because Hulk is an engine of rage, and he dispatched with that version of Sasquatch to re-establish himself as the top-dog on the gamma scene. Still, in a book that was filled with scares up to that point, this was still the most chilling scene.

8 HULK BEING DISSECTED

With the Avengers believing Hulk was out of control, they appeared in issue #7 and attempted to stop him. But this was easier said than done, and the group winds up having to go all out, bombarding him with enough solar radiation to leave only a skeleton.

It’s here that the villain of the series makes it’s appearance, abducting Hulk’s remains...and dissecting them! The issue ends with the above image, closing on the site of a Hulk that managed to revive but within multiple jars.

7 HULK'S FIRST KILL

It’s discussed a few times in the series that Hulk has never actually taken a life. It sounds absurd, but its how we’ve justified the character is allowed to consider himself a hero over the decades despite causing trillions of dollars in property damage.

But issue #8 dispenses with this nonsense and finally gets some blood on the Hulk’s hands. After the character gets dissected by Shadow Base, Hulk sticks around long enough to gain intel before reassembling himself... around the scientist who was mocking him.

6 HULK BEATING THE ABSORBING MAN WITH HIS OWN SKELETON

Crusher Creel gets manipulated into attacking the Hulk by Shadow Base, who gives him a way out of jail and promises a power-up to him if he’s able to work with them and take the Hulk down.

The power-up in question lets him drain gamma radiation from the Hulk. Unfortunately, accessing gamma causes him to open the Green Door, letting the One Below All in. This causes a horrific transformation in Creel, splitting his body open but still allowing him to attack. It’s just too bad Hulk is unbothered by this, draining gamma back and using Creel’s own skeleton as a weapon to beat him down.

5 HULK HAVING A HEART

After the initial twelve issues of the story are in the tank, Bruce has been sent through the wringer. He’s been killed multiple times, witnessed the Hulk take a life inside of him, and even been sent to a version of Hell where he meets a version of the devil who appears to look just like his dad. It’s...not a great time to be Bruce Banner.

After being freed from Hulk, Banner is almost ready to give up and allow his body to be destroyed when the Green Door closes. Fortunately, this new Hulk is there to remind him that there is someone caring and watching out for Bruce: him. Who’d have thought this Hulk would have a heart?

4 THE NEW ABOMINATION

After Shadow Base fails at literally everything else, they awaken the Abomination. Unsurprisingly, in a horror comic, a character with a name like that is even worse than before.

A monstrous shell of its’ former self that was merged with Hulk’s old sidekick Rick Jones, this new version of Abomination was capable of absorbing humans into its horrific form. At the same time, it was also capable of damaging Hulk’s body with it’s stomach acid, becoming a real challenge for him.

3 BETSY ROSS KILLING THE HULK

Immortal Hulk takes an honest look at the relationship between Betsy and Bruce, going into detail on how it’s not always the Hulk ruining her life. Banner’s played a part as well, and with Betsy regaining her own gamma powers and becoming Harpie, she makes a key appearance in issue #19.

After Hulk winds up on the losing end of his fight with Abomination, his body’s literally falling apart. Going Savage again, he begs for someone to help him. Betsy decides to take out her frustration...and “help” him...by clawing open his chest and yanking out his heart, forcibly rebooting his healing factor...and bringing new Hulk back to get the win over Abomination.

2 HULK EATS THE UNIVERSE

After nearly two years' worth of issues, Al Ewing decides to get cosmic with us. Skipping ahead a bit for a look at what happens in the future, we see Hulk at the end of all time.

In the same way Galactus became who he was by being showered with the energy from the Sentience of the Cosmos, Bruce is offered the same treatment. But in billions of years, it’s no longer Bruce that’s there...but the One Below All. He takes the Sentience and consumes him just before the creation of the Ninth Incarnation of creation, becoming something... new.

1 HULK CLOTHESLINING A PLANET

The most recent issue of the Hulk is more than a bit out there. It creates a wholly new existence unlike anything we’ve seen before—a new race, new planets, and a new universe. And a new Hulk.

The One Below All with the Hulk’s power and the sentience of the former cosmos, we learn in this latest incarnation Hulk has obliterated nearly every planet there is. The latter part of the issue sees him literally clotheslining a planet into nothingness before destroying the star serving as its sun, leading to all life in the Ninth Incarnation being completely destroyed, and the Hulk being what he always said he wanted to be: alone.

Quite the way to end the first major milestone issue—hopefully things begin to look up from here.
