The Immortal Hulk, even when he was merely incredible, has done some terrible things. Collateral damage trails the hero, leaving a path of destruction in his wake. One such moment has been key to the ongoing Immortal Hulk series by Al Ewing and Joe Bennett. That moment is the day Jackie McGee’s home was destroyed by the Incredible Hulk.

Jackie, a reporter who once had a vendetta against Bruce Banner, has allied herself with the Hulk and his friends in a preview for Immortal Hulk #23. While the gamma-irradiated heavies charge into battle, Jackie is brought back to the day she and her father were forced from their home by a televised Hulk alert.

The flashback is especially compelling because the bloody results of the Hulk’s rampages are often abstracted, but here we see the terror in the victims’ eyes as the green monstrosity rips through their living room. The reader even gets a little epilogue -- Jackie’s father’s insurance didn’t cover the destruction while the Hulk went on to get a pardon and a statue.

Now, though, Jackie is working with the Hulk because, as she observes, he has changed. He’s not the same monster that trashed their house and left them destitute. That was a rage-filled, rudderless Hulk. This Hulk is still full of rage but, perhaps even more terrifying, it’s a guided rage -- the Hulk has a plan that Jackie helped construct… and it’s about to come together.
