“Surgeon X," the futuristic medical thriller debuting Wednesday from Image Comics, will arrive with an enhanced companion app featuring exclusive behind-the-scenes content, as well as the entire first issue in color and black and white.

Written by documentary filmmaker Sara Kenney ("Angels and Ghosts") and illustrated by John Watkis, "Surgeon X" asks,"What if we lived in a world of antibiotic resistance and rationing, where the superbugs have won?" Set in dystopian 2036 London, the series follows the adventures of the brilliant renegade Rosa Scott, "who becomes Surgeon X, a vigilante doctor who uses experimental surgery and black market drugs to treat patients.”

"Surgeon X" is colored by James Devlin, lettered by Jared K. Fletcher, and edited by Vertigo founder Karen Berger.

Funding for the series and the “Surgeon X" Enhanced Comic App was provided by a Society Award from Wellcome, a global charitable foundation that “exists to improve health for everyone by helping great ideas to thrive," and which allowed Kenney to consult with a diverse group of experts about the latest developments in medicine, biology, sociology and biomedical ethics.

“Surgeon X” extrapolates on the very real problem of antibiotic resistance and the emergence of untreatable strains of bacterial infections. The companion app similarly looks “behind the panels” and ‘behind the balloons” to provide exclusive content that explores the science and history of antibiotics through animated scientific shorts and historical footage.

The “Surgeon X" Enhanced Comic App deepens the reading experience, and features original music and sound design, as well as animated content depicting the media landscape of "Surgeon X’s" fictional universe, including “political campaigns, commercials and news reports."

Documentary interviews with the creative team and the experts who contributed to Kenney’s world-building complete the app’s extras.

The “Surgeon X" Enhanced Comic App launches Sept. 28 on the App Store and Google Play Store to coincide with the release of the first oversize issue.
