Ten years ago, Image United brought together the creators and many of the characters who established Image Comics as a major comic book industry publisher in the 1990s.
Written by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, Image United featured art and characters from Image founders and comic book icons Marc Silvestri, Todd McFarlane, Erik Larsen, Whilce Portacio, Rob Liefeld and Jim Valentino.
While the first few issues of the series saw Image heroes like Spawn, Savage Dragon, Witchblade, CyberForce, Shadowhawk and Youngblood team up with the new hero Fortress to battle the ultra-powerful Omega Spawn in 2009 and 2010, the final three issues of the series never materialized.
In a new Instagram post, Liefeld reaffirmed his commitment to seeing the series completed.
"I'm determined to finish it in the very near future," Liefeld wrote. "It was an ambitious project way ahead of its time."
Liefeld went on to explain how one splash page alone featured pencils and inks from all of the series' artists and added that he couldn't believe that the Image United team produced over 70 pages working in a similar vein.
Throughout the past decade, several of the creators involved have said that the remaining issues were in various states of completion and cited their mutual busy schedules as the reason for the delay. When Liefeld mentioned working on the series earlier this year, Erik Larsen told ComicBook that he had completed layouts for two of the miniseries' three remaining issues, and hoped that the other Image founders were still working on pages.
As it stands, Image United currently sits in the pantheon of major unfinished comic book runs, alongside other infamously delayed titles like Neil Gaiman and Mark Buckingham's Miracleman. However, if Liefeld gets his way, Image United won't stay that way forever.
