Image Comics turns the clock back to 1992 with The Phalanx, a new one-shot from writer/artist Jonathan Luna.

Following a successful Kickstarter campaign, The Phalanx #1 is set to hit comic shops on Wednesday, June 1. The one-shot serves as an homage to the independent comic titles that first launched Image 30 years ago. It follows Spur, a mercenary from modern-day Los Angeles who finds herself back in the year 1992 after chasing a "mysterious villain" through a portal. There, she meets a "famous superhero team" and realizes that they "have a common goal."

Inspired since 1992 by the series that launched Image Comics, writer and artist JONATHAN LUNA (ALEX + ADA, 20XX) creates an homage to honor its 30th anniversary with THE PHALANX!

Spur, a mercenary in modern-day Los Angeles, chases a mysterious villain and finds herself going through a portal and running into a famous superhero team. They realize they have a common goal.

Based in Portland, Oregon, Image Comics was founded in 1992 by the team of Erik Larsen, Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, Whilce Portacio, Marc Silvestri and Jim Valentino. The goal of Image was to provide a venue for creator-owned comics, as the publisher's founders had grown frustrated with the "work for hire" policies used by Marvel and DC.

As previously mentioned, Luna's new one-shot takes its cues from Image's founding titles, which included McFarlane's Spawn, Lee's Wildcats, Liefeld's Youngblood, Silvestri's Cyberforce, Portacio's Wetworks, Valentino's Shadowhawk and Larsen's Savage Dragon. Image subsequently became the home of a number of other popular titles, including The Walking Dead, Invincible, Saga, Kick-Ass and more.

Regarding Image's salad days of the early '90s, Luna said. "This era was a magical and formative time for me. For many years, I've wanted to show my love, and I finally figured out how -- this one-shot comic, The Phalanx. I want it to ooze ''90s comics' in story, art and format, yet still contain my style and sensibilities. There will be tons of references, and I challenge you to find them!" On that note, the one-shot is suggested for mature readers.

Written and illustrated by Jonathan Luna, The Phalanx #1 goes on sale June 1 from Image Comics.
