The Suicide Squad star Idris Elba would be interested in a spinoff film that explores his character Robert DuBois/Bloodsport's rivalry with Superman in the DC Extended Universe.

Elba spoke with Entertainment Tonight about what he would like to see next for his DCEU counterpart. "It wouldn't be next, it would be what came before. I would be really interested to see why he went to jail, why did he shoot Superman," Elba said. "I would love to see that narrative come alive."

Created by John Byrne and Karl Kesel for 1987's Superman Vol. 2 #4, the DC comic book version of Robert DuBois/Bloodsport was manipulated and conditioned by Lex Luthor into wanting to kill Superman. He nearly did just that after using a Kryptonite needle gun to severely weaken the Man of Steel in their first battle, before Jimmy Olsen saved the day and got Superman the medical attention he needed. This also gave Kal-El enough time to recover and defeat Bloodsport in their next showdown.

The Suicide Squad reveals the DCEU's Robert DuBois/Bloodsport shot Superman with a Kryptonite bullet, which resulted in him being caught and imprisoned in Belle Reve. However, the film doesn't specify the circumstances that led to him trying to kill the Man of Steel, much less how he got ahold of Kryptonite after Batman stole Lex's supply in the 2016 DCEU movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

In light of The Suicide Squad's under-performance at the box office, it's unclear whether any spinoffs will come to pass outside of HBO Max's already-filmed Peacemaker series. Moreover, even writer/director James Gunn admitted he doesn't know exactly what Warner Bros. is planning to do with Superman in the DCEU. "I'm here in the middle of DC; everyone's always asking me, is Henry Cavill still Superman? I don't know who Superman is! Who knows!" Gunn said, commenting on the idea of a Justice League vs. Suicide Squad movie.

The Suicide Squad is now playing in theaters and streaming on HBO Max. While it remains to be seen if Elba plays Bloodsport again, DC Films president Walter Hamada did recently hint that Gunn is developing more DC projects for the company beyond the Peacemaker show.
