Actor Idris Elba has appeared in a variety of films over the years, from the adaptation of Stephen King's Dark Tower to the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Among his larger roles is that of the titular DCI in the BBC series, Luther. The actor has long championed a feature film to accompany or continue the story and he took the time to do so once again after receiving his BAFTA Television Award.

Speaking to the press, Elba reminded everyone that he has advocated a film for some time now, stating, "I'm looking forward to making that happen. It is happening." The actor went on to explain the reasoning behind a film, "With film, the sky is the limit. You can be a little bit more bold with the storylines. And a little bit more international, and a little more up the scale," though he assured Luther fans, "John Luther is always going to be John Luther."

Elba has previously suggested across numerous interviews that a film is already in development and that series creator Neil Cross is writing it. It should noted that a cinematic continuation of the film has been discussed as far back as 2012, when Cross and Elba suggested that the third series would lead into a film.

Luther follows DCI John Luther and his tumultuous relationship with criminal Alice Morgan. The two begin as enemies but slowly develop a partnership. The series premiered in 2010 and has seen a total of five series since, the last of which aired in 2019.
