Heimdall, the all-seeing gatekeeper of Asgard in Marvel's Thor movies, met with an unfortunate end near the beginning of this summer's Avengers: Infinity War and isn't likely to be seen again. His actor, Idris Elba, however, is not only alive... he's the sexiest man alive.
The selection of a Sexiest Man Alive is an annual tradition of People publications, beginning in 1985 and honoring such heartthrobs as Johnny Depp, Ryan Reynolds and Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth, who was People's pick for 2014. Elba is the 33rd celebrity to join the ranks of the Sexiest (although a few lucky guys got in there multiple times), and the third man of color to be chosen.
Jess Cagle, People's Editor-in-Chief, was clear about the award being "fun," but also noted that Elba was named for more than his chiseled physique and alluring voice. "For a man to be sexy in 2018, we need to know that they are respectful of women, and that there's a kind of kindness and generosity of spirit about the guy." Elba's joy in fatherhood was highlighted, as well as his upcoming wedding to model Sabrina Dhowre.
Elba's reaction to receiving the title seemed to be equal parts modesty and confidence. “I was like, ‘Come on, no way. Really? Looked in the mirror, I checked myself out. I was like, ‘Yeah, you are kind of sexy today.’"
For every day of 2018, he'll find a lot of agreement on that count.
