Actor Idris Elba and his wife, Sabrina, are teaming with anime streaming service Crunchyroll to executive produce Dantai, an "Afro-futuristic science fiction series."
Idris Elba serves as executive producer through his Green Door Pictures production company, and Sabrina Elba also executive produces through her company Pink Towel Pictures, reported Deadline.
The saga explores the struggle of two people in a futuristic society where one community benefits from biotechnology and the other suffers from the lack of it. "Two rising stars from either side of this divide are pitted against each other in a story that will ultimately explore equality and kinship within a corrupt society," according to the Dantai logline.
"We're really excited to be announcing this deal on our first anime," Idris and Sabrina Elba said in a joint statement. "We're both fans of the genre and see a huge opportunity to create something unique for a powerhouse like Crunchyroll. The story of Dantai is our first collaboration as producers together and is one that is close to our hearts."
"We look forward to bringing this exciting project to life," said Sarah Victor, Crunchyroll senior director of development. She said it is "a privilege to work with such talented, creative partners."
AT&T's WarnerMedia sold Crunchyroll in December 2020 to Sony for almost $1.2 billion. Sony plans to fold it into its Funimation service. Crunchyroll recently passed four million subscribers and offers a library of 1,000 anime properties covering 30,000 episodes.
