In the ’90s, DC Comics' idea of an event was something that could fit inside of a single month. Every comic would participate with a tie-in issue, then things would go back to “normal” by the end. One of the more memorable crossovers was DC One Million. It was a storyline where heroes from the 853rd century traveled back to the year 1998 to invite the heroes to the future to compete in superhuman games.

Of course, when everything goes wrong, their heroes are trapped in the future while the Justice Legion A is trapped in the past. A new Superman villain premieres and we wind up with one of the best Vandal Savage stories ever.

10 ...START AGAIN

The crossover kicks things off in the right spot by letting us know the scale of things. DC One Million is a crossover where every issue jumps forward one million months into the future to help us see what everything looks like then.

The Justice Legion A invites the original seven members to the future to participate in contests to display their incredible powers. But what causes this occasion almost gets lost: the original Superman has been alive all this time, living in the sun. It’s a fact so astounding that even Superman needs them to explain it again.

9 VANDAL SAVAGE BEATS THE TITANS

In case everyone forgot, Vandal Savage is terrifying. Alive for millions of years, subtly changing and altering key moments around him for his benefit, again and again, he’s one of the JLA villains everyone should constantly be asking about.

DC One Million sees what should’ve easily been a new Titans roster attempting to bring down what was supposed to be a simple arms deal...but it all goes terribly wrong. In only a handful of pages, Savage takes out Arsenal, Supergirl, Garth (Tempest), and Jessie with nothing more than his wits.

8 PAST JLA VS. FUTURE JLA

It’s literally impossible to do one of these crossovers without the heroes first getting into conflict. Typically writers put it at the very beginning before the inevitable team-up. Grant chose to shunt it off into JLA 1,000,000. Our JLA has been trapped in the Watchtower when the Justice Legion A arrives needing the tech the team has.

The two teams are mistrustful, leading to a battle between Zauriel, Big Barda, Huntress, Steel, and Plastic Man vs. the future Big Seven. The result? Big Barda leaves the Wonder Woman of the future on her knees. And the others nearly take out the remaining members before they decide to help one another save two timelines.

7 VANDAL SAVAGE TRAPS THE TITANS IN ROCKET RED OUTFITS

Vandal Savage gets away with so much in this storyline. First, he beats the Titans in only a couple minutes. Then he destroys a city with nuclear weapons.

Next, he explains to the world’s governments he’s going to continue erasing all their major cities until everyone accepts Vandal Savage as the new ruler. But then we learn the method is going to be shoving the Titans into the armor he’s bought and using them as remote weapons, attempting to take out heroes that challenged him and cities at the same time.

6 J'ONN BEATS VANDAL SAVAGE

Because his focus issues tend to be in the League, J’onn rarely ever gets credit for so many of his best moments. The present version of Savage spends so much time causing untold death and destruction, right down to threatening to wipe out Metropolis.

Enraged by Savage’s actions, Martian Manhunter immediately takes on a cannon shot from Vandal’s own gigantic tank. He tells Savage plainly that there’s no place for him anymore, and tears the immortal’s “siege engine” apart with his hands.

5 STARMAN SAVES THE DAY

The Solaris program is able to take over both computers and humans alike, causing computers to malfunction and humans to start to act more and more erratic and violent. The reason Solaris’ plan is able to work at all is that he has help.

Farris Knight is asked to place a Kryptonite piece, the Knight Fragment, somewhere on Mars to help take out Superman. After being found out though, Batman encourages him to do the right thing. With very little time left, Starman travels inside of the Solaris body and manages to save his future, sacrificing his own life while leaving the heroes with a chance to defeat Solaris again in the future.

4 SUPERMAN PUNCHES THE TIME BARRIER

We don’t really get to see much of DC One Million Superman, as he’s mostly focused on in this crossover and then never seen again. But he seems to be a futuristic version of Pre-Crisis Superman. Just as morally pure, but most importantly he seems to be at least as powerful.

They describe him as being “faster than a speeding tachyon, and able to leap from planet to planet in a single bound”. But in the past, his powers are barely working thanks to being disconnected from the futuristic super-sun. Still, knowing the League of the past needs his JLA’s help, he uses the last of his power to punch his way into the future, breaking the time barrier with nothing more than his own energy.

3 KYLE RAYNER STOPS A SUPERNOVA

Solaris awakens in the modern day with plans of taking the entire solar system with him. In combat with heroes from countless different Justice Legions, it takes the original League to find a way to take him out. With Solaris never having faced Kyle before, he’s unprepared for a Green Lantern’s power.

Eventually, they come up with the idea to force Solaris into going supernova, and through sheer willpower alone Kyle holds an exploding star from destroying the solar system. Then the Superman of the future arrives to help as well, but this is still an awesome moment for what was then the “only” Green Lantern.

2 SOLARIS' ATTEMPT FAILS

Originally, Vandal Savage and Solaris’ plan was to take the Prime Superman out of the equation the moment he broke out of the sun, with a piece of Kryptonite given to them by Farris Knight. But the futuristic Starman is caught, and rather than remain a traitor, he decides to swap the “Knight Fragment” for something else.

Though Superman Prime’s past self tries to stop it, ultimately he isn’t able to keep up—but he doesn’t need to. The rock plunges into the sun and a familiar symbol is imprinted over the sun: the Green Lantern insignia. Thanks to the efforts of heroes past, the present Superman Prime ends up with the most powerful weapon ever made.

1 THE WINK

There are more epic moments in the last issue of this four-part crossover than in entire twelve-issue maxi-series. After beating Solaris, Superman Prime gets to rebuild an immortal version of Lois Lane, bringing her back to life and getting his one true love.

With the help of Hourman, he brings back Krypton, getting to meet his father and mother for the first time. But there’s one last moment….it reminds you that no matter how powerful he’s become, no matter what he’s achieved...he’s still the Superman we know and love.
