Ice Cube turned down a $9 million role in a comedy after refusing a COVID-19 vaccine.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ice Cube declined a request by Sony producers to get vaccinated, exiting upcoming comedy titled Oh Hell No entirely as a result. Ice Cube would have co-starred with Jack Black in the project. Both Sony and a personal representative of the actor declined to comment on the matter.

Prior to filming, which was intended to start in winter 2022, producers requested that all cast receive a COVID-19 vaccine. The studio is reportedly looking for a replacement for Ice Cube, who would have been paid $9 million for the role. Throughout the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Ice Cube has promoted mask-wearing and was one of several people who donated 2,000 face masks to Bacone College in Oklahoma. He also partnered with the manufacturer Black Out on a line of pro-mask t-shirts, where all proceeds went towards frontline health workers.

Black and Ice Cube had partnered on the comedy in June 2021 with Kitao Sakurai, who previously helmed the Netflix comedy Bad Trip, set to direct. Even without one of the film's leads departing the project, production on Oh Hell No had been pushed back already after Black injured himself while filming the last episode of Conan. However, Black is still attached to the film and shared a video of himself post-vaccination in April 2021, which later went viral.

It was reported in July that Hollywood studios and guilds had agreed on an updated set of protocols regarding COVID-19, which were announced in a joint statement issued by the Teamsters, SAG-AFTRA, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, the Directors Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. The statement included giving producers "the option to implement mandatory vaccination policies" for cast and crew members working in Zone A, which is the area on film productions where cast and crew typically work in close proximity without protective equipment.

Oh Hell No is reportedly the second project that Ice Cube has departed, as the actor was meant to co-star in a boxing drama from Univeral titled Flint Strong, but is no longer attached to the film. However, the reasons for his departure have not been disclosed. Ice Cube isn't the only actor to refuse vaccination, with Miles Teller reportedly shutting down the set of Paramount Plus' The Godfather series -- titled The Offer -- after testing positive for COVID-19 and refusing to both be vaccinated or take a COVID test.
