I Love Ya But You’re Strange - That Time Sgt. Rock's Gun Narrated a Story

Every week, I will spotlight strange but ultimately endearing comic stories (basically, we're talking lots and lots of Silver Age comic books). Here is the archive of all the installments of this feature. Feel free to e-mail me at bcronin@comicbookresources.com if you have a suggestion for a future installment!

EDITED TO ADD: I thought that this would make for a nice Veteran's Day spotlight.

This week, based on a suggestion from everyone's pal, Layne, we spotlight Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert's kooky classic tale from Our Army at War #146, showing the secret life of Easy Company's weapons!

The concept of the story is simple, tell a typical Sgt. Rock and Easy Company story, only have it be narrated by their guns (especially Rock's Tommy Gun)...

After a grenade saves the day, there is a fascinating discussion between the guns about whether grenades are "real soldiers," like them...

There is a classic riff on a typical Kanigher/Kubert tale when one of the new guns later on malfunctions, just like a newly assigned soldier to Easy Company...

Classic parody of the new recruit who proves his bravery just in time to die saving the others.

Then a riff on a classic Rock duel with a German officer. How awesome is a luger being a bad guy, with dialogue and everything!

We end with one last riff on a classic Sgt. Rock trope, the rifle jammed into the ground to mark a death...

What an awesome issue.

Thanks for the suggestion, Layne!
