The first footage has arrived from the live-action adaptation of I Kill Giants, the 2008 Image Comics series by Joe Kelly and J. M. Ken Niimura.
Directed by Anders Walter in his feature debut, the film deals with outcast fifth-grader Barbara Thorson (Madison Wolfe) who immerses herself in fantasy worlds, such as Dungeons & Dragons, to escape the harsh reality in which she lives. Her troubles leads to her interacting with giants she believes she's meant to fight, although it's uncertain if they're real or part of her coping with her personal issues.
The clip, unveiled by Entertainment Weekly, depicts Barbara walking through the woods with her friend Sophia (Sydney Wade) to check a she's set for the giants she believes are lurking near their homes. It also highlights Sophia's cynicism, as she tries to convince Barbara the giants may well be part of her imagination. (Note that the EW video player can't be embedded, so you'll have to watch the clip at the link.)
The movie also stars Zoe Saldana Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Trek) as Barbara's school psychologist, Ms. Molle, and Imogen Poots (Need for Speed, Fright Night) as Barbara's sister. Kelly wrote the film's screenplay, with Chris Columbus producing through 1492 Pictures/Ocean Blue Entertainment.
Published to critical acclaim, I Kill Giants won "Best Indy Book of 2008" by IGN as well as the Gold Award at the 5th International Manga Award in 2012. It was also named in 2010 among the "Top Ten Great Graphic Novels For Teens" by the Young Adult Library Services Association.
