Zelda fans were pleasantly surprised when they learned of the upcoming Hyrle Warriors: Age of Calamity release. During an interview at Tokyo Game Show, the game's producer revealed that he was glad the game didn't leak beforehand because he was happy to have the opportunity to surprise fans with the announcement.

Producer Yosuke Hayashi said, "I am just so glad the game didn't leak! (laughs). We really wanted it to be a surprise, so it was great to see everyone so excited by the announcement."

The game's director, Ryota Matsushita, said he believes the title will live up to fans' high expectations. He said, "We know that many people treasure the experiences they've had with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. We're confident this game will satisfy those players, so we really hope you all look forward to the game launching soon."

Producer Masaki Furusawa worked on the original Hyrule Warriors, but this time there was very close collaboration with the Zelda team. He explained, "Since this game takes place 100 years before Breath of the Wild, I think it's one moving part of a greater whole. We worked very closely with the Zelda team; they supervised all of our work." Furusawa continued, "I worked on the first Hyrule Warriors title, but compared to that, the Zelda team was over 100 times more involved this time around...I can't wait for players to try it out."

Hayashi revealed that the team thought they were done making Hyrule Warriors games until Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma approached them about Age of Calamity. He said, "We started development on Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity after Eiji Aonuma of Nintendo approached us. We thought we were done with Hyrule Warriors games, at least for the time being. The first game was like a celebration of Zelda and was full of characters from throughout the series...I hope we can make more interesting games like this in the future."

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity will take place 100 years before Breath of the Wild, and will follow Hyrule Royal Knight Link, Hyrule Princess Zelda, Zora princess Mipha, Gerudo Chieftain Urbosa, Goron champion Daruk, Rito champion Revali, and Sheikah warrior Impa as they battle Calamity Ganon. The game is available for pre-order now and will be released on Nintendo Switch -- physically and digitally -- on Nov. 20 for $59.99.
