After developing the hit animated adaptation of Castlevania for Netflix, producer Adi Shankar is working on adapting another successful video game title for television.

Shankar is working with Hyper Light Drifter creator Alx Preston on an animated series based on Preston's action-RPG title. Still in the early stages of development, the duo are looking for something more stylistically inspired by the same rather than a strict adaptation.

"The difference between a series and a game is vast in a lot of ways," explained Preston in an interview with Polygon. "Hyper Light as a game was pretty atmospheric and kind of overbearing at times. For a series, the question is: how do you sustain and keep your attention on a non-interactive run? Does it get really, really dark and serious? Does it have some levity?”

A pixelized, post-apocalyptic fantasy adventure developed by Preston's independent game company Heart Machine, Hyper Light Drifter was released on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC in 2016 and on the Nintendo Switch this past September. Largely inspired by the animated films of Hayao Miyazaki, Preston and Shankar are still deciding if an adaptation to the silent game would similarly feature dialogue at all.

"There’s still a question of how much dialogue we really have, if any," revealed Preston. "Could it be a more silent series or would we have voice acting? Considering Hyper Light was wordless, there’s an idea there of how much that would carry over to to a show.”
