In Left Unresolved, I spotlight storylines that have been, well, left unresolved.

Today, as a follow-up to a post I did about a wacky baseball game between DC's superheroes and supervillains, I reveal whether we actually got a resolution to the bet that was at the heart of that game!

The Huntress debuted in 1947's Sensation Comics #68, in a story drawn by Mort Meskin and written by an unknown writer...

She was a fun villain and she soon was added to the the Injustice Society in All-Star Comics #41 (by John Broome, Carmine Infantino and Frank Giacoia - all names we're used to from the Silver Age, but here they were all together late in the Golden Age)...

Years later, Sportsmaster and Huntress (now married) were part of the Injustice Society once again in Justice League of America #123 (by Cary Bates, Elliot S! Maggin, Dick Dillin and Frank McLaughlin)...

Then, in 1976, Gerry Conway did something that he did a couple of other times around this era, which was to introduce an Earth-1 version of an Earth-2 villain, bringing in the Earth-1 Sportsmaster and Huntres into Batman Family #7 (art by Curt Swan and Vince Colletta), and Conway really played up the idea of a married supervillain couple...

This led to DC Super Stars #10 (by Bob Rozakis, Dillin and McLaughlin), where Huntress decides that supervillains always lose, so that she wants to become a hero. Sportsmaster objects and they decide to have a bet over it. They'll make a team of supervillains play a team of superheroes at baseball and the winner will decide which way they go...

It's hilarious how evil the Huntress' plot to become a superhero is...

In the end, the superheroes prevail, but we never get to see anything in the issue that says that they definitively WILL become superheroes...

And then here's the real rub. That was DC Super Stars #10. DC Super Stars #17 introduced a new superhero known as...the Huntress!

So there were a lot less opportunities for Huntress stories once there was a brand-new popular hero by that name.

The next time we see the other Huntress, it was back to the Earth-2 version...

The Earth-1 versions of Sportsmaster and Huntress are actually never seen again. When we check in on them again, it is post-Crisis and they are a married couple who have a daughter, Artemis, who takes after them in villainy...

Roy Thomas later showed the early days of Huntress as "Tigress" in his Young All Stars series.

So we never learned what happened to the Earth-1 Sportsmaster and Huntress and whether they became superheroes or not.

Thanks to Bruce P. for suggesting the original story (I mention him again because he believed it was unresolved, as well)!
