Hunter x Hunter is one of the most popular shonen anime series, and for good reason. Many of the show's characters are lovable or interesting in their complexity. While the mark of good writing, this means that when characters die, it's all the more heartbreaking.

Other characters, however, are not quite as likable. Whether they make viewers uncomfortable or straight-up annoy fans, many wish they were not a part of the series at all. Other times, it's certain scenes that make viewers less than pleased. While Hunter x Hunter is a true masterpiece of a series, there are several things about it that fans wish they could forget.

10 Tonpa, Who Was Annoying And Deceitful

Tonpa with an evil grin

Tonpa is perhaps the most hated character in all of Hunter x Hunter. As someone who has failed the Hunter Exam numerous times, he knows he is incapable of passing so he only retakes it in order to crush the hopes of first-time examinees. Gon, Killua, and friends find this out the hard way.

Tonpa enjoys sabotaging other examinees and first gets them to trust him by pretending to be helpful. Though his time on the show is relatively short, many fans wish they could forget him.

9 Palm's Inappropriate Romantic Interest in Gon

During the Chimera Ant Arc, in a strange turn of events, Palm and Gon went out on a date. Palm, a woman in her 20s, thinking of Gon, a 12-year-old boy, in a romantic way is just plain creepy.

The date is pretty forgettable, especially when compared to what happens once the Chimera Ants become involved. It adds little to further the plot and is a strange side story in an otherwise well-written arc. Any fans who did not already forget it ever happened likely wish they could.

8 Kurt And Reina's Shocking Deaths

Hunter x Hunter Reina and Kurt

Kurt and Reina, two children living in a village in the NGL, were introduced at the beginning of the Chimera Ant Arc. Their violent deaths marked a change of tone for the series, letting fans experience a little of the horrors that the Chimera Ants would leave in their wake.

At only nine years old, Kurt saw himself as his family's protector. Tragically, he met his end while attempting to defend his sister from a Chimera Ant. To the horror of viewers, both children were devoured by the Queen.

7 Ponzu And Pokkle's Brutal And Heartbreaking Deaths

Pokkle Ponzu HxH

Pokkle and Ponzu were another two characters whose deaths many fans want to forget. They first made their appearance in the Hunter Exam arc, and they returned to investigate the NGL, only to be brutally killed almost immediately.

The bee-loving Ponzu attempted to escape the Chimera Ants — however, she was shot, killed, and devoured by one of them. Pokkle would suffer a more grisly fate. Captured alive, he had his brain probed by Neferpitou, who in this way learned about Nen. He was then killed and eaten by the Queen.

6 Pitou Holding Kite's Head, An Unforgettable Image

The fan-favorite character Kite took on Neferpitou but quickly realized that the Chimera Ant was too strong for him to defeat. He, unfortunately, met his end, and the image of Pitou holding his decapitated head in her lap would forever be seared into the brains of viewers.

To make things worse, Pitou would then reanimate Kite's corpse and use it as a training dummy for new ants. Kite's death was one of the most traumatizing in all of Hunter x Hunter — for Gon and viewers alike.

5 Pouf And Youpi's Weird Pleasure At Sacrificing Themselves

Pouf & Youpi Willingly Sacrificing Themselves For The King

By nature, Chimera Ants would do anything for their king, Meruem, even at the expense of their own health and wellbeing. This is exactly what Pouf and Youpi did — they fed themselves to Meruem in order to heal him. However, this scene made many viewers highly uncomfortable.

Pouf and Youpi seemed to take so much pleasure at the opportunity to sacrifice themselves. With abundant moaning, facial expressions showing ecstasy, and bursts of light focusing on their groin regions, the sexual nature of this scene was clear.

4 Hisoka's Creepy Obsession With Gon

Hisoka's Personality Hunter x Hunter

Strong, complex, and sometimes scary, Hisoka is one of the most popular characters in the series. However, one thing many fans wish they could forget about him is his strange obsession with Gon.

Battling and defeating powerful opponents gives Hisoka sexual gratification. He is especially attracted to Gon and becomes not-so-subtly sexually aroused during their fights. While it could be argued that Hisoka is actually just attracted to Gon's power, it's still undeniably creepy, given Gon is 12 years old and he is an adult man.

3 Meruem And Komugi Dying Together

Meruem, designed to fulfill the role of Chimera Ant King with a ruthless disregard for humans, slowly realized the value of human life through his encounters with Komugi. A young Gungi master, Komugi played with Meruem, and the two developed a bond that went beyond the board game.

Even though Meruem survived his fight against Netero, the radiation from Netero's sacrifice poisoned both Meruem and Komugi. Many fans could not help but tear up when the two, who found meaning in their unlikely friendship, died together after playing one last game.

2 Killua Crying Over Gon, Which Made Fans Cry Too

Killua Crying

For many fans, one thing they'd like to forget over any of the aforementioned moments is when Killua expressed his perceived uselessness at not being able to protect Gon. Seeing his best friend in absolute anguish and rage, destroying his body to defeat Pitou, caused Killua to break down. He blamed himself for Gon's condition and was terrified at the thought of losing him.

To see Killua, who usually doesn't express his emotions and who gets embarrassed when Gon outwardly appreciates their friendship, bawling his eyes out — it was heartbreaking.

1 The Manga's Extended Hiatus, The Ultimate Tragedy

Hunter X Hunter Manga Cover

More than anything having to do with Hunter x Hunter's actual content, the manga's indefinite hiatus is the number one thing fans want to forget. While the manga has been ongoing since 1998 and is no stranger to extended hiatuses, fans haven't seen new content since 2018, making this the longest hiatus in Hunter x Hunter's history.

Fans can only sit and hope that the mangaka, Yoshihiro Togashi, recovers his health sufficiently to one day return to Hunter x Hunter. In the meantime, fans have plenty of content in the form of two anime series, the manga, and more to revisit as they wait.
