Hunter x Hunter is one of those stories that could readily double as a comic book series. The mixed bag of colorful personalities and the inevitable life lessons keep the narrative afloat, but the "superpowers" that fuel the action are just as significant. Nen is an intricate concept, but it would prosper in worlds where creatures like Thanos and Darkseid exist.

Pairing anime characters versus comic book heroes isn't as much of a stretch as it may seem since they both reside in eccentric worlds with reality-defying rules. In that same vein, here are 5 Marvel and DC superheroes that Gon Freecss can defeat and 5 that would triumph against him. For the sake of balance, Adult Gon won't be mentioned in any entries since the specifics of such a brutally raw form haven't been established.

10 Can Defeat: Beast Boy

Beast Boy's capabilities depend on which animal he morphs into. It takes mere seconds for him to transform into whatever known creature he desires, big or small, and can utilize their skills as needed. As impressive as that may be, Gon Freecss didn't make it through 60 episodes of the Chimera Ant arc to let himself be defeated by more animals.

Gon's enhanced senses, particularly his dog-like sense of smell, would make it difficult for Beast Boy to catch him off guard as a small animal. Gon also possesses the agility and reflexes to fend off any attacks from larger creatures. As refined as Beast Boy's abilities may be, the young Hunter outdoes him in every category.

9 Can't Defeat: Raven

Gon has a glaring weakness against otherworldly powers like telekinesis, which is right up Raven's alley. Her soul-self can absorb a limited amount of energy, thus providing adequate protection against Gon's Jajanken. Though she's not the best fighter, she can manipulate time as well as shadows and darkness, which the anime protagonist simply wouldn't be able to handle.

Raven's greatest advantage lies within her psionic abilities of empathy and emotion negation. Altering the sentiments of her opponents is formidable enough, but Gon is already impulsive to a fault. Unhinging his mental state would expose his vulnerabilities, leaving him wide open for Raven to dish out some damaging blows.

8 Can Defeat: Robin (Damian Wayne)

Damian and Gon share several traits, including agility, hand-to-hand combat talents, exceptional hearing, and stealth. While the matchup would be an entertaining one—with Robin putting up a praise-worthy struggle—his physical human limitations would lead to his downfall. The odds of him cracking the Hunter's indomitable will to even the playing field is also unlikely.

Though the two are similar in various ways, Gon immediately has the upper hand thanks to his Nen. Sure, Robin's studies as Batman's apprentice and his experience with the League of Assassins could come in handy. However, Gon would ultimately "Rock, Paper, Scissors" his way to a smooth victory.

7 Can't Defeat: Shazam

Billy Batson is a young boy, but all he has to do is say the magic word and he becomes an adult superhero with legendary abilities. While he's always a kid at heart, Shazam's skillset is no laughing matter. He wields the powers of Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury, meaning Gon's Nen would be child's play in this scenario.

Gon is too stubborn to go down without a fight so he would test his physical limits by fending off Batson for as long as possible. However, Shazam is practically on par with Superman in terms of invulnerability and strength. The two children would go at it for a memorable showdown, but Gon's Jajanken wouldn't even scratch Shazam.

6 Can Defeat: Hawkeye/Green Arrow

Depending on where your franchise loyalties lie, one of these archers is slightly better than the other. Objectively speaking, Hawkeye and Green Arrow are essentially the same characters...and Gon could effortlessly topple them both at the same time. He is a professional Hunter, after all. He just doesn't need a bow and arrow to get the job done.

With his enhanced senses, incredible reflexes, and impressive stamina, Gon would have no trouble dodging arrows from both of these superheroes. Even with covert positions, Freecss would be able to sniff out their locations and put a damper on their strategy.

5 Can't Defeat: Gambit

Gambit's card tricks have an uncanny resemblance to Hisoka's Nen, which already indicates how Gon would fare against him. Remy LeBeau's molecular acceleration allows him to "charge" objects so that they deliver explosive damage. His playing cards require little to no charging time, meaning they could easily overwhelm Gon and deplete his stamina.

Gambit has also been known to muddle a person's sensory awareness to knock them unconscious. With senses being such a massive facet of Gon's combat strategy, this skill alone could end the confrontation disappointingly early. Even if it boiled down to a close-range encounter, Gambit's martial arts/Bo staff talents would surely overpower Gon.

4 Can Defeat: Nightcrawler

Gon's strengths automatically negate the bulk of Nightcrawler's skillset. His camouflage would be pointless since the anime hero has an impeccable nose. His night vision is matched by the young Hunter's enhanced senses. The pair is even in terms of agility and reflexes, but Gon's adaptability and talent for strategizing would eclipse Kurt Wagner's powers.

Nightcrawler's most popular talent is his teleportation, which wouldn't faze a seasoned fighter like Freecss. His "jumps" would serve well for the reduction of Gon's stamina, but they wouldn't be substantial enough to win him the fight. The battle would presumably be reminiscent of one of the lower-stakes matchups in, say, the Greed Island arc.

3 Can't Defeat: Spider-Man

In the Hunter x Hunter anime/manga series, Gon has an arduous time coping with Hisoka's Bungee Gum. What would be the superhero equivalent to that if not Spider-Man's webs? Even though Peter Parker's webs are visible—whereas Hisoka's Nen can't be seen by the naked eye—they're also shockingly strong.

Another sector where Spidey has the Hunter beat involves senses. The famous "Spider-Sense" warns Parker of incoming danger, meaning he could outshine Gon in his own area of expertise. While a blow from Jajanken would prove troublesome for Spider-Man, the amount of time necessary to charge it up would leave Gon exposed to a string of restrictive webs.

2 Can Defeat: Black Widow

Natasha Romanoff is a spy that was intensively trained in espionage, martial arts, and infiltration. These are all impressive traits...for a human. Black Widow would have her work cut out for her in an encounter with Gon Freecss. As a matter of fact, this hypothetical crossover is only being posed for the sake of picturing a pre-teen anime character square up against a grown Russian spy.

As is the case with Hawkeye/Green Arrow, Black Widow wouldn't physically be able to keep up with Gon. She also wouldn't have the means to dupe his senses. The utilization of weapons might be her best bet, but Freecss has defeated enemies far more daunting than a human with guns and dual batons.

1 Can't Defeat: Zatanna

Zatanna

With such a lengthy list of abilities, it's appalling that Zatanna is still so criminally underrated within the DC universe. The magician would make an outstanding Nen user in the Hunter x Hunter world and could even pose a threat to Hisoka. It's highly likely that Zee would triumph if paired against the illusionist, meaning Gon could never stand a chance.

While Gon is an analytical combatant that can craft resourceful strategies on the fly, he's not astute enough to outsmart an illusionist. Sure, he managed to land a blow to Hisoka's face at Heaven's Arena, but it wasn't enough to win him the entire fight. On top of that, Zatanna could get painfully creative with her backward incantations, which would only spell more trouble for the young Hunter.
