Katniss Everdeen is heading East with an old friend.
Deadline reports Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence is set to reteam with her original Hunger Games director Gary Ross for a new adaptation of an entirely different color: East of Eden, the classic John Steinbeck novel about a family of farmers and their increasingly contentious lives. The novel was previously adapted for film by Elia Kazan in 1955, with actors James Dean and Richard Davalos playing Cal and Aron Trask, sons who compete for their farmer father’s affections. The new version sees Lawrence playing the farmer’s estranged wife, and the boys’ cruel mother.
Another similarity between the Hunger Games films and Ross’ East of Eden adaptation: just as Mockingjay is being split into two films, East of Eden will be told over the course of two movies.
Lawrence and Ross’ adaptation will come courtesy of Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer. Production isn’t expected to begin until Lawrence has completed her work on the Hunger Games movies.
