Gary Ross seems to have emerged as the director for Lionsgate’s movie adaptation of The Hunger Games, beating out fellow directors like Sam Mendes and David Slade. But is there more than meets the eye to the decision?
Deadline Hollywood reports that Ross may not have been offered the position yet, but is “the choice” of the studio; however, it also notes that Mendes actually dropped out of contention last week because of the possibility that MGM’s financial situation may be clearing up, making the likelihood of his stalled Bond movie coming to fruition much more favorable. Similarly, Slade, the third of the assumed top three directors in the running for the gig, is also one of the two front-runners in discussion for Fox’s Wolverine 2 director’s position – Does his being passed over for Hunger Games come, perhaps, from movement on that project (Slade has been assumed to be the studio favorite for the next Wolverine movie, due to his success with The Twilight Saga: Eclipse)? Expect movement on that movie very soon – and don’t be surprised if Slade’s name is mentioned as director. Ross, meanwhile, is expected to be officially confirmed as helming The Hunger Games soon.
