Venom is one of Spider-Man's most popular foes. Introduced in the late 80s, when Spider-Man's former symbiotic costume gain a new host in the form of disgruntled former reporter Eddie Brock.  While he started as a villain,  Venom has gone back and forth between either being a villain or an anti-hero. Over this long history, Venom has faced off against a variety of foes.

While Venom is often built up as one of Spider-Man's most powerful foes, there are some undignified defeats in Venom's long history as a comic book character. This article examined what CBR considers Venom's top ten most humiliating defeats.

10 Overexertering Himself By Shooting Too Many Webs

First impressions are everything and Venom should be thankful that his first defeat at the hands of  Spider-Man is mostly forgotten. Venom made his first physical appearance in the 300th issue of Amazing Spider-Man when it was revealed that he is the figure behind recent attacks on Spider-Man's friends and family. While Venom was built up a good bit before his confrontation, his first defeat is rather underwhelming.

Spider-Man was able to beat him by taking advantage that Venom's webbing is created from the symbiote itself. Venom used enough webbing that there not is enough symbiote left over to effectively bond with Eddie.

9 Getting Tricked By A Holographic Cave

While Venom is considered a major threat because of his brute strength and is often beaten by heroes using their wits, there a point where it gets kind of silly.  One of Venom's more embarrassing cases of being outwitted can be seen in Spider-Man: Special Edition.

In Spider-Man: Special Edition, Venom escaped from the Vault's custody during preparation for his trial. To capture him, Spider-Man worked with the Vault's security to set up a ridiculous trap. That trap being that they disguised part of the Vault as a cave, using holographic technology to trick Venom back into his cell.

8 Operation Decibel

One of Venom's weaknesses is to loud noise, which leads to many of Venom's defeat.  Most of the time these defeats come at the hand of advanced sonic technology. When these defeats come at the hand of more mundane sound sources, it comes off as more humiliating.

A good over the top example of Venom being defeated by mundane sources of loud noises would be Operation Decibel from the second issue of Venom: The Hunted. In this miniseries, the NYPD stops Venom from rampaging by having every air raid siren, bell, and other loud objects in New York city go off at once to immobilized him.

7 Getting Knocked Out By The Hulk Clapping

This defeat continues the theme of Venom experiencing embarrassing defeats as a result of loud noise. This time Venom experienced a sonically induced defeat in Peter David's very silly Incredible Hulk vs. Venom one shot.

The comic finds the Hulk fighting Venom as a result of a misunderstanding over Venom's intentions for saving people trapped by an earthquake. Hulk quickly defeats Venom by knocking him out with a clap, which due Hulk's super strength creates a loud enough to noise to knock out the symbiote. The threat of the Hulk clapping is, however, a weakness that Venom overcomes given later events of the one-shot.

6 Freaked Out By An Air Raid Siren

Yet another example of Venom's weakness to sound giving Venom a humiliating defeat can be seen in the second issue of Venom: Along Came A Spider.

In this issue, Venom gets into a fight with the Ben Ridely incarnation of Spider-Man. Police detective Steen decides to set off an air raid siren to immobilize Venom so that Spider-Man can knock him out. This defeat would lead to a previous entry on this list when the NYPD learn from this victory over Venom that loud sounds could defeat him, leading to them to set up Operation Decibel.

5 By A Bunch Of Air Horns

The final example of Venom suffering a humiliating defeat due to loud noises comes from the second issue of Deadpool Kills The Marvel Universe AgainThis example of a humiliating defeat for Venom is unique because we see the aftermath of this fight rather than the actual fight.

In the second issue of the miniseries, a group of heroes finds Eddie Brock dead body while following Deadpool, as he rampages through New York City. Moon Knight realized that Deadpool killed Brock to take back the Venom Symbiote in his effort to kill Spider-Man. Also, he concludes that Deadpool defeated Venom by setting up his apartment with air horns to weaken the symbiote's bond.

4 Getting Shamed By Iron Man

This humiliating defeat for Venom is the result of it occurring in an interesting period in Venom history, occurring between his truce with Spider-Man and the beginning of his anti-hero phase. Venom decides to kill Tony Stark because he viewed Stark Industries as a company that preys on the innocent. This effort would lead to him to battle Iron Man in Iron Man no.302.

Rather than defeat Venom with some hi-tech sonic or flame-based weapon, Iron Man decided to defeat Venom through shame. Iron Man calls out Venom that his attack on Stark Industries is not helping any innocent and is only proving to the world that he is still a monster. Venom was so ashamed at this realization that he end his attacks on Iron Man.

3 Losing To Spider-Man So Badly That Even The Symboitie Is Ashamed

The Venom symbiote leaves its host, Angelo Fortunato, in comics

Angelo Fortunato is considered by many comic book fans as the least compelling host of the Venom Symboditie. This is not only an opinion held by those of us outside of the Marvel Universe, but also by those held by those in-universe too.

Most noticeably the Venom Symbiote was not impressed by Angelo Fortunato as a host. After Angelo killed a former classmate of Peter Parker, he faced a very enraged Spider-Man. Spider-Man's unexpected ferocity caused Angelo to flee from a fight, and the Venom Symbiote was so disgusted by his actions that he broke away from Angelo causing him to fall mid-jump.

2 Freaked Out By Some Burning Newspapers

While Venom's other main weakness is fire, you tend not to see it being the primary cause for his defeats. This defeat here makes a good case for why that is.

In the 16th issue of Peter Parker, Spider-Man, Venom and Sandman attacked the Daily Bugle. After Sandman was taken out by a hungry Venom, Spider-Man decides to use Venom's weakness to fire to get him outside of the building. That being first freaking him out with a lighter than using that lighter to set a bunch of Newspaper on fire to use as an improvised torch to scare Venom out of the Daily Bugle.

1 Getting Hit In The Head By A Binder

The most embarrassing defeat for Venom is actually from a small cameo in the 29th issue of Sensational She-Hulk. Despite its being only a couple of pages long it gives Venom his most embarrassing defeat yet when he gets hit in the head by an old lady with a binder.

In the issue, the evil Doctor Sanderson decides to have his student observe one of She-Hulk's trials to explain the concept of the fourth dimension to them. Finding the trial boring, Dr. Sanderson teleports Venom from a fight with Spider-Man into the courtroom. Venom was, however, soon dispatched by She-Hulk ally and binder-welding Louis Mason.
