Tom King and Greg Smallwood's DC Black Label maxi-series Human Target has already put its protagonist, Christopher Chance, through the wringer -- and Chance's growing list of enemies goes cosmic in the upcoming third issue.

Chance's latest assignment involved him standing in for Lex Luthor when the longtime supervillain and DC Universe business mogul was targeted by assassins. After ingesting a slow-acting poison slated to kill him in twelve days, Chance has grown close to the cryokinetic superhero Ice, learning more about her tragic past. This relationship has not gone unnoticed by Ice's on-again/off-again boyfriend Guy Gardner, with the Green Lantern jealously approaching Chance in a preview for Human Target #3, written by King, illustrated by Smallwood and lettered by Clayton Cowles. The issue's standard cover is illustrated by Smallwood and the variant cover, spotlighting Ice, is illustrated by Stanley "Artgerm" Lau.

  • Christopher Chance is a man on a deadline and working to solve a crime that might be unsolvable. Despite his better judgment, he’s falling for his lead suspect, and her violent ex-boyfriend isn’t happy about it. Oh, and that ex? He’s a Green Lantern.

The Christopher Chance iteration of the Human Target was created by Len Wein and Carmine Infantino in 1972's Action Comics #419 as a private investigator and bodyguard who was hired to impersonate his clients when they were in danger. King and Smallwood's story places Chance on a race against time to solve his own murder after ingesting poison intended for his latest client, Lex Luthor, with Chance determined to learn who attempted to kill Luthor only to accidentally poison him instead as his final days alive begin to steadily dwindle.

Ice approached Chance with some surprise information of her own the day after the Human Target was lethally poisoned before a romance blossomed between the two. This has certainly incurred the jealous wrath of Ice's Justice League International teammate Guy Gardner, making Chance's remaining handful of days left on Earth and his assassination investigation all the more complicated, especially as Guy abuses his intergalactic authority as a Green Lantern to take jurisdiction over the matter.

Written by Tom King and illustrated by Greg Smallwood, Human Target #3 goes on sale Dec. 28 from DC Comics.
