The Hulkbuster, a specialized giant suit of armor that Iron Man donned in 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron, went through several incarnations before its design for the Marvel Cinematic Universe was finalized. Film and Concept Designer Phil Saunders has posted one more of these incarnations to his Instagram, along with a few intriguing notes about his process.

As its name implies, the Hulkbuster was created to subdue Bruce Banner if he lost control of his Hulk alter-ego. From that perspective, it makes sense that Saunders used the MCU's Hulk as a model for one of his own Hulkbuster designs.

"A much different approach with this hulkbuster," Saunders wrote. He explained how he drew on the work of other Marvel Studios artists: "I tried to match the proportions of [Ryan Meinerding] and [Charlie Wen]'s hulk design and interpret it as an ironman suit."

The image shows the Hulkbuster in a Bigfoot pose, showing off its metal musculature. Although the bulging biceps wouldn't realistically add anything to the machine's power, Saunders also made note of some of the weapon's practical functions: "The floating panels are meant to be shock absorbing so #tonystark can take #hulksmash!!"

Iron Man's battle with Hulk from within the Hulkbuster was a centerpiece of Avengers: Age of Ultron, drawing on Marvel comics lore to pit Tony Stark's engineering genius against the Hulk's raw strength.

Directed by Joss Whedon, Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, Chris Evans as Captain America, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Don Cheadle as War Machine, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Quicksilver, Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as J.A.R.V.I.S/Vision, Anthony Mackie as Falcon, James Spader as Ultron and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. The film is currently available on Digital HD, DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD.
